Chapter 8 - The Carranza Counter-Strike

When Elena arrived back at the cliffside estate, she found Matthew in his private gym, working out his frustrations on a heavy leather punching bag. His grey shirt was soaked with sweat, his movements explosive and precise.
She stood by the door, waiting until he finished a final, brutal combination. He grabbed a towel, wiping his face, his eyes immediately softening when he saw her expression.
"What happened?" he asked, stepping out of the ring and walking over to her.
"Ambrose called me," Elena said, her voice tight. She repeated the conversation word for word, detailing the threats against his shipping fleet and the demand for her father's deep-water rights. "Matthew... I can't let him do this to you. This marriage was supposed to protect me, but it's bringing a war to your doorstep. If he ties up your fleets in regulatory court, you'll lose billions. Maybe... maybe we should find a way to settle with him."
Matthew listened quietly, tossing his towel onto a bench. He walked over to a small refrigerator, pulled out two bottles of water, and handed her one. When he looked back at her, there was no fear, no anxiety—only a terrifying, cold amusement.
"Elena," he said softly, reaching out to gently touch the side of her face, his thumb brushing against her cheek where the bruise had once been. "Do you truly think I acquired this empire by backing down from crooked politicians and old-money predators?"
"No, but..."
"Arthur Ambrose thinks he owns the maritime ministry because he finances their re-election campaigns," Matthew said, his voice dropping to a deathly calm register that made Elena’s heart beat faster. "What he doesn't know is that the Carranza Group owns the satellite infrastructure that monitors those politicians’ private offshore banking transactions. I don't play defense, Elena. I let my enemies think they have a leverage point, and then I amputate the limb they used to hold it."
He walked over to his desk in the corner of the gym, tapping a button on his laptop. A digital dossier appeared on the screen, filled with photographs, bank routing numbers, and classified government intelligence reports.
"For the last six months, my private intelligence division has been tracking a massive illegal smuggling operation operating out of Ambrose’s northern ports," Matthew revealed. "He has been using his political immunity to bypass customs inspections, moving black-market automated weaponry and restricted industrial tech into foreign territories. He needed your father’s deep-water shipping corridors because they are completely outside the standard naval patrol paths. It wasn't just about money for him—it was about a secure pipeline for his criminal syndicate."
Elena stared at the screen, horrified by the darkness of the world she had almost been bartered into. "He’s a smuggler... a traitor."
"He is a dead man walking," Matthew corrected her. "Tomorrow morning, I am hosting a private dinner at our estate. I’ve invited the Director of Federal Maritime Security, the Minister of Defense, and Arthur Ambrose himself. He thinks he’s coming here to dictate terms to us. Instead, he is walking straight into a firing squad."

Matthew stepped closer to her, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a profound, unshakeable intensity. "This isn't a war you brought to my doorstep, Elena. This is a war I am choosing to fight for you. Because nobody threatens my wife, and nobody gets away with hurting what is mine."
For the first time since their arrangement began, Elena realized that the contract wasn't the only thing binding them together. Beneath the logic and the corporate strategy, something raw, protective, and deeply passionate had taken root between them.
