Chapter 5 - The Grand Opening Move

The registration of the marriage between Matthew Carranza and Elena Vargas was completed within four hours, executed via a private judicial officiant inside Matthew's study. There were no flowers, no white dresses, and no family guests. There was only a heavy leather-bound ledger, a series of ironclad pre-nuptial agreements ensuring Elena's absolute financial autonomy, and the scratching of expensive fountain pens.
When Elena signed her name, she felt a strange, electric shift in the air. She was no longer Elena Vargas, the vulnerable orphan hiding from her stepmother's goons. She was Elena Carranza, the wife of the most powerful logistics mogul in the hemisphere.
"Now that the foundation is secure," Matthew said, capping his pen and looking at Christopher, who was standing by the door. "It’s time to deliver the opening salvo. Is the press release ready?"
"Yes, Mr. Carranza," Christopher replied, a rare smile breaking across his stoic face. "The wire services are primed. It will hit every financial and social news outlet in the country at exactly 12:00 PM."
At precisely noon, the media landscape erupted. The headline on the front page of the Silverspring Financial Review read: "SHOCK ALLIANCE: TITAN MATTHEW CARRANZA MARRIES ELENA VARGAS; CARRANZA GROUP ACQUIRES MAJORITY DEBT IN VARGAS LOGISTICS."
The fallout was instantaneous.
Miles away, in the opulent morning room of the Vargas mansion, Isabel Vargas was nursing a severe migraine brought on by a night of failed searches and a furious, drunken Arthur Ambrose threatening to pull his investments. She was staring at her tablet when the news alert flashed on her screen.
Isabel let out a choked, strangled shriek, her expensive porcelain coffee cup slipping from her hand and shattering on the Persian rug.
"No... no, this is impossible!" she screamed, her face contorting with an ugly, panicked rage. "Elena? That pathetic little brat married Matthew Carranza? How? When?!"
Before she could process the shock, her personal assistant burst into the room, her face white with terror. "Madam! The bank... the Bank of Silverspring just called. They’ve suspended our corporate line of credit based on a 'material change in risk assessment.' And there are federal auditors from the Maritime Registry waiting at the front gate!"
Isabel stood up, her body shaking violently. She realized in an instant that her entire plan had been flipped on its head. The girl she had treated like property had just vaulted into the heavens, aligned herself with a god of industry, and brought down a hammer of financial ruin upon her head.
Meanwhile, back at the Carranza estate, Matthew handed Elena a glass of sparkling water. "Your stepmother’s corporate phones are currently ringing off the hook, Miss... excuse me, Mrs. Carranza. Her shares are in free fall. By tomorrow morning, she will be desperate enough to agree to a meeting."
Elena took the glass, her eyes reflecting the bright ocean light. For the first time in her life, she didn't feel afraid of her stepmother's wrath. She felt an icy, calm anticipation.

"I want to be in that meeting, Matthew," she said, using his first name for the first time. "I want her to look me in the eye when she loses everything."
Matthew looked at her, a glimmer of genuine admiration softening the cold edges of his dark eyes. "I wouldn't dream of leaving you out."
