Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Pierces

The trial of Evelyn Pierce was the shortest in the history of the Cook County federal building.

Faced with the irrefutable evidence of the dual-ledger accounting system, the testimony of her cousin from Sinclair Financial, and the digital forensics from Lakeshore Genetics, her defense team opted for a straight guilty plea to charges of corporate fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit witness tampering.

She was sentenced to seven years at a federal correctional facility in West Virginia, her name permanently stripped from the charitable boards and high-society registries she had spent her life protecting.

Gregory Pierce disappeared from Chicago’s social fabric entirely. Deprived of his wealth, his title, and his mother’s control, he took a low-level administrative position at a minor logistics firm in southern Indiana, living in a small, anonymous apartment that looked remarkably like the one he had pulled Clara from a year prior. The city he had once owned from his three-level penthouse had forgotten him before the first snow fell.

The Evolution of the EmpireInside the newly minted offices of Hayes Maritime Logistics, the atmosphere was vibrant, forward-looking, and entirely clean.

Clara sat in her expansive corner office on the forty-fifth floor, looking out over the harbor. The desk in front of her was covered in new green-energy transit proposals for the Great Lakes network. She was eight and a half months pregnant now, her beauty softened by the impending arrival of her child, but her eyes held the absolute authority of a woman who had built her own throne.

The door opened softly, and Gabriel walked in, carrying two cups of chamomile tea. He had dropped his usual imposing demeanor, his face relaxing into a warm, genuine smile that he only ever showed her.

"The regulators just cleared the final transfer of the Rotterdam terminals, Clara," Gabriel said, setting the tea down on her desk before leaning against the edge. "You are officially the largest maritime logistics operator in the midwest."

"We are," Clara corrected, reaching out to take his hand.

Gabriel looked at her, his fingers interlocking with hers, his thumb tracing the smooth skin of her wrist. "You could have walked away once the Pierces were destroyed, Clara. You didn't need to stay in this world."

May you like

"I stayed because I found out I’m very good at it, Gabriel," Clara smiled, her gray eyes warm as she looked up at him. "And because I found out that the deadliest man in Chicago isn't actually a wolf. He’s just very protective of what belongs to him."

Gabriel leaned down, his lips brushing hers in a slow, certain kiss that smelled of rain and promises. "You never belonged to me, Clara. You belong to the empire you built."
