Chapter 5 - The Snake's Venom

The response from the Pierce machine was immediate and vicious.

By Thursday morning, the high-society tabloids and financial columns were flooded with carefully leaked stories. The headlines didn't mention the SEC investigation; instead, they focused entirely on character assassination.

"The Evanston Extortionist: How a Former Waitress Targeted the Pierce Heir."

"Fraudulent Pregnancy Used in Multi-Million Dollar Corporate Blackmail Scheme."

The articles included heavily edited photos of Clara from her college years, painting her as a calculated social climber who had manufactured a pregnancy to extract a massive settlement from the Pierce family trust. A statement from Lakeshore Genetics was prominently featured, confirming the "irrefutable scientific proof" that the child she carried was not of the Pierce bloodline.

Inside the Aster Street penthouse, Evelyn Pierce sat across from her PR director, her face tight with satisfaction. "Make sure the national desks pick it up. If Gabriel Falco wants to use her as a puppet, we will ensure that puppet is so toxic no judge or regulator will dare sit in a room with her."

"And what about Gregory?" the director asked.

"Gregory is being handled," Evelyn said, looking toward the balcony where her son was staring out at the gray city. "He just needs to keep his mouth shut until the Sinclair merger is signed on Saturday night."

The Counter-MoveFive miles south, inside the sleek, glass-walled war room of Falco Industries, Clara sat at a long conference table surrounded by six of the top corporate litigation attorneys in the midwest. She wore a tailored charcoal wool dress that elegantly accommodated her pregnancy, her hair styled in a sharp, professional bob. She didn't look like the woman who had cried in the rain three weeks ago. She looked like an executioner.

Gabriel stood by the whiteboard, a marker in his hand, tracing the interconnected corporate entities of the Pierce-Sinclair merger.

"They're taking the bait," Gabriel said, turning to look at Clara. "Evelyn thinks she’s winning the public relations war. She’s spent three million dollars in twenty-four hours to saturate the media with those stories."

"Let her spend it," Clara said, her voice entirely devoid of emotion as she looked at her tablet. "Every article they publish using that Lakeshore Genetics report is another count of wire fraud and malicious defamation. Have our forensic accountants finished the audit on the Sinclair trust?"

"They have," one of the attorneys said, passing a document across the table. "Evelyn’s cousin at Sinclair Financial hasn't just been managing their private accounts. He’s been using the Lakeshore Genetics parent company to wash the unregistered capital coming out of the Pierce maritime terminals in Rotterdam. It’s a classic dual-ledger system."

Clara looked up at Gabriel, a small, cold smile touching her lips. "The Sinclair merger gala is Saturday night at the Drake Hotel. Every major investor in the city will be in that ballroom."

"Are you ready for a party, Clara?" Gabriel asked, his dark eyes gleaming with a dangerous anticipation.

"I’ve been practicing which fork to use, Gabriel," Clara said, standing up from the table, her hand resting gently over her child. "I think it’s time I showed Evelyn Pierce how well I learned her lessons."
