Chapter 3 - Redefining Alliances

Clara stared at the billionaire standing at the edge of her bed. The panic that had sustained her through the storm was beginning to transmute into something harder, a cold layer of self-preservation that she didn't know she possessed.

"You have my files," she stated, her voice steadier now as she pointed to the folder in his hand.

"I have the report from Lakeshore Genetics," Gabriel replied, opening the file. "The one that says Gregory Pierce has a zero percent chance of being the father of that child. I also have the background check my security team ran on you while you were sleeping. Six months ago, you were working thirty hours a week at a bistro in Evanston while completing your degree in supply chain management. Gregory met you, fell in love with your lack of pedigree, and decided to play the savior."

"I loved him," Clara said, her voice dropping into a whisper. "I didn't care about his money."

"Perhaps you didn't," Gabriel countered, his eyes narrowing. "But Evelyn Pierce certainly did. Tell me, Miss Hayes, do you know who owns Lakeshore Genetics?"

Clara frowned. "It’s a private clinic on the Gold Coast."

"It’s a subsidiary of Sinclair Financial, which is managed by Evelyn Pierce’s first cousin," Gabriel said, tossing the file onto her bedside table.

Clara’s heart stopped. She looked at the paper, the zero percent probability logo suddenly looking less like a medical verdict and more like a corporate signature. "She... she forged it."

"Of course she forged it," Gabriel said, a trace of amusement dancing in his dark eyes. "Evelyn Pierce would rather see her son marry a mannequin than a woman who understands how their supply chains actually operate. She knew that if you married Gregory, you would eventually look at the books. You would see where the missing capital from their eastern shipping corridors is going."

Clara leaned forward, her fingers digging into the edge of the luxury mattress. "You want to use me to destroy them."

"I am a businessman, Miss Hayes. I don't do charity," Gabriel said, stepping closer until he was standing directly beside her pillow. He leaned down, his scent of sandalwood and rain filling her senses. "The Pierces have been blocking my access to the Port of Chicago for three years. They use their political connections to tie my ships up in customs audits. I want their shipping lanes. You want your dignity back, and you want a future for that child."

He held out his hand. His palm was broad, scarred across the knuckle, and completely steady.

"Stay here," Gabriel murmured. "Let them think you died in that storm. Let them file their press releases about Gregory’s tragic breakup. Work with my analysts to map out the vulnerabilities in Pierce Global's infrastructure. In exchange, I will give you the best medical care in the country, an ironclad identity, and when the time comes... I will let you be the one to press the button that demolishes their house."

Clara looked at his hand. She knew that agreeing to this meant stepping out of her quiet life forever. It meant entering a world of wolves. But she looked down at her bandaged feet, remembered the look on Gregory's face as he pushed her into the freezing rain, and realized she no longer wanted to be a lamb.

She reached out and placed her small, pale hand into Gabriel's wide palm. "On one condition."

Gabriel raised an eyebrow. "And that is?"

"We don't just take their company," Clara said, her gray eyes turning as cold as the lake wind. "We take their name."

Gabriel’s laugh was low, dark, and thoroughly satisfied. "Welcome to Falco Industries, Clara."
