Chapter 6 - The True Heir's Proof

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of black silk, white diamonds, and gold-leaf architecture. Over six hundred of Chicago’s most powerful figures had gathered to celebrate the formal signing of the Pierce-Sinclair logistics merger—a union that would create a twenty-billion-dollar monopoly over the Great Lakes shipping corridors.
Gregory Pierce stood near the ice sculpture of a container ship, a glass of champagne in his hand, his smile tight as he shook hands with the senior senators and banking executives. His mother stood beside him, her diamond necklace flashing under the chandeliers like a warning light.
"The papers are ready in the private salon upstairs, Gregory," Evelyn whispered, her eyes scanning the room with triumphant satisfaction. "Once the clock strikes ten, the signing will be broadcast to the floor. The Falco threat is neutralized."
At exactly 9:15 p.m., the massive double doors of the ballroom swung open.
The ambient chatter of six hundred people died instantly. The string quartet playing near the stage faltered, their bows scraping awkwardly against the strings.
Gabriel Falco walked into the room. He wore a custom Tom Ford tuxedo that made him look like a shadow given form. But he wasn't the reason the room had gone silent.
Walking beside him, her arm looped securely through his, was Clara Hayes.
She wore an emerald green silk gown that proudly emphasized her pregnancy, her neck adorned with a flawless vintage emerald choker that had belonged to Gabriel’s grandmother. Her skin was radiant, her stride steady and regal as her silver heels clicked against the parquetry floor. Behind them walked two men in dark federal suits, carrying leather briefcases bearing the seal of the United States District Court.
Gregory’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the floor. "Clara..."
Evelyn Pierce’s face went entirely gray, her fingers digging into her Chanel bag so hard the leather groaned. "Security," she hissed to the director standing near the wall. "Get them out of this room immediately."
"I wouldn't do that, Mrs. Pierce," one of the federal agents said, stepping forward and presenting a certified warrant. "We are here to execute a federal material witness subpoena issued by Judge Harrison of the Northern District of Illinois."
Gabriel and Clara stopped directly in front of the Pierce family, the crowd parting around them like the Red Sea. The silence in the ballroom was so absolute you could hear the ice sculpture melting.
"You have a lot of nerve coming here, Falco," Gregory snarled, stepping forward, his face flushed with a dangerous mix of humiliation and unresolved longing. "Clara, you're a fraud. We have the medical records. You're trying to blackmail my family with a bastard child."
Clara looked at Gregory. For seven months, she had believed this man was her protector. Now, looking at him, she saw nothing but a fragile boy wrapped in an expensive suit.
"I don't need to blackmail you, Gregory," Clara said, her voice clear and resonant, carrying to the furthest corners of the vaulted room. "And as for the medical records... I agree. Let's look at them."
She turned to the second federal agent, who pulled a sealed white document from his briefcase.
"This is a court-ordered, legally ironclad prenatal paternity analysis," Clara announced, her eyes locked onto Evelyn’s pale face. "Conducted forty-eight hours ago by the Department of Forensic Medicine at the University of Chicago, under the direct supervision of federal marshals. The samples were cross-referenced with Gregory Pierce’s mandatory corporate insurance profile on file with the state."
She paused, letting the weight of the moment settle over the room.
"The probability of paternity," Clara said, her voice striking like a hammer on an anvil, "is 99.99%."
A collective gasp ripped through the ballroom. Several board members from Pierce Global immediately took three steps away from Evelyn, as if trying to distance themselves from a falling building.
"That's a lie!" Evelyn shouted, her aristocratic poise completely disintegrating. "The Lakeshore report—"
"The Lakeshore report was a forgery manufactured by your cousin, Arthur Sinclair," Gabriel Falco stepped forward, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that silenced her instantly. "The federal authorities raided Lakeshore Genetics two hours ago, Evelyn. Your cousin is currently in a holding cell at Metcalfe Federal Building, and he’s already signed a cooperation agreement detailing exactly how much you paid him to falsify Clara’s records."

Gabriel leaned closer, his dark eyes burning with absolute triumph.
"You didn't just throw out a pregnant woman, Evelyn," Gabriel whispered, though the entire room heard him. "You committed federal wire fraud to manipulate your company’s stock valuation before a major merger. And by midnight, the federal government is freezing every single asset tied to the Pierce family trust."
