Chapter 8 - The Abattoir

The old meatpacking facility on the edge of the harbor smelled of rust, stagnant saltwater, and decaying iron.

Vanessa awoke tied to a metal chair in the center of a vast, cavernous room lit by a single overhead bulb. Her head throbbed violently where Victor had struck her, and a warm trickle of blood had dried along her cheekbone.

Standing in front of her was Don Moretti—a frail-looking old man with thin grey hair, wearing a fine wool coat, holding a heavy walking stick topped with a silver skull. Beside him stood Victor, holding a rag against his bleeding nose, grinning like a hyena.

"So," Don Moretti said, his voice raspy like dry leaves rubbing together. "This is the little girl who turned Luca Santoro into a fool. I must admit, I expected someone... grander."

"He's going to kill you," Vanessa spat, trying to pull her wrists free from the heavy zip-ties securing her to the steel frame. "You have no idea what he's going to do to you."

Moretti chuckled, a dry, coughing sound. "Luca Santoro is a boy playing at being a king. He forgot the fundamental rule of our world: love is a weakness. He left his perimeter exposed for a sweet face and a orphan child. Today, he dies because of you."

"He won't die," Vanessa said, looking Moretti dead in the eye. "He's better than you. He's stronger than you."

"We'll see," Victor sneered, stepping forward and pulling a long hunting knife from his belt. "I think I'll cut that pretty face of yours before he gets here, just to give him something nice to look at."

Victor raised the knife.

BOOM!

The massive steel doors at the end of the facility were blown off their hinges by a breaching charge. The deafening roar echoed through the steel rafters, accompanied by a shower of sparks and blinding white smoke.

Before the smoke could even clear, the sound of rapid, precise gunshot fire filled the air.

TAP-TAP. TAP-TAP.

Three of Moretti’s guards fell instantly, their bodies dropping like stone.

Out of the smoke walked Luca. He wasn't taking cover. He wasn't flinching. He walked forward like an inevitable force of nature, his assault rifle raised, firing with terrifying, surgical precision.

"Kill him!" Moretti screamed, retreating toward the back exit with two of his personal bodyguards. "Kill him now!"

A volley of gunfire erupted from the upper catwalks. Luca rolled smoothly behind a heavy steel meat trolley, bullets sparking violently off the metal surface. He pulled a grenade from his vest, pulled the pin with his teeth, and tossed it blindly over the top.

The explosion rocked the building, sending metal debris and screaming men falling from the catwalks above.

Luca stepped out from behind the trolley, reloading his weapon with a quick, practiced motion. His dark coat was splashed with rain and oil, his face set in an expression of pure, unadulterated slaughter.

Victor, panicking as he saw his men eradicated in less than ninety seconds, grabbed Vanessa from behind, wrapping an arm around her neck and pressing the cold steel of his pistol against her temple.

"Stop right there, Santoro!" Victor yelled, his voice cracking with sheer panic. "Put the gun down or I blow her brains out!"

Luca stopped twenty feet away. He slowly lowered his rifle, letting it hang by its tactical sling.

"Look at you," Victor laughed hysterically, his grip on Vanessa tightening until she gasped for air. "The great Luca Santoro! Brought to his knees for a girl! Drop the weapon, or she dies!"

Luca looked at Vanessa. His eyes didn't show fear. They showed absolute, unwavering confidence.

"Vanessa," Luca said softly, his voice cutting through Victor’s hysterical rant. "Do you remember what I told you in the garage?"

Vanessa, struggling to breathe, looked into his eyes.

"I don't break promises," Luca whispered.

In a split second, Vanessa understood. She didn't pull away; she dropped her weight completely, sagging down toward the floor with all her body mass.

Victor’s arm was yanked downward by her sudden movement, exposing his head for a fraction of a second.

THWACK!

Luca drew a suppressed sidearm from his hip holster with lightning speed and fired a single round.

The bullet caught Victor squarely between the eyes.

Victor’s eyes rolled back, his grip snapped, and his heavy body collapsed backward onto the concrete floor like a felled tree.

Vanessa fell to her hands and knees, gasping for air, her heart hammering wildly.

Before she could process what had happened, Luca was at her side. He dropped to his knees, his hands instantly slicing through the plastic zip-ties with his combat knife. He pulled her up into his chest, wrapping his arms around her with a force that almost took her breath away.

"I have you," Luca breathed into her hair, his body trembling with the aftershocks of sheer adrenaline and terrifying love. "I have you, my love. You're safe."

Vanessa clung to him, burying her face in his shoulder, weeping uncontrollably as the dark world around them finally fell silent.
