Chapter 6 - The Shadow Falls

The next three weeks passed in a blur of domestic tranquility that Vanessa had never dared dream of.

Luca transformed the estate into a fortress of joy for Lily. He had a massive Christmas tree brought into the Great Hall, decorated with gold ornaments and twinkling lights. He spent his evenings sitting on the floor with Lily, building complex train tracks and listening with endless patience as she explained the backstory of every doll she owned.

For Vanessa, it was a dream waking up every morning knowing her child was fed, safe, and happy. Luca treated her with a tender, fiercely protective devotion that slowly healed the deep psychological wounds left by Mark’s abuse. They spent long nights talking by the fire, reconnecting, bridging the gap between the teenagers they had been and the adults they had become.

But in the underbelly of the city, the storm was brewing.

Don Moretti had not forgiven the humiliation at the gate. Victor’s broken face was an insult the old mafia boss could not ignore without losing face among the other crime families.

It happened on a crisp afternoon three days before Christmas.

Luca was at his downtown office, finalizing the acquisition of a shipping line, while Vanessa and Lily stayed at the estate with Mrs. Gable and a contingent of six armed guards led by Geno.

Vanessa was in the kitchen, helping Mrs. Gable bake Christmas cookies, when the sudden, harsh sound of automatic gunfire shattered the quiet afternoon.

RAT-AT-AT-AT-AT!

The heavy glass windows of the conservatory exploded into thousands of glittering shards. Mrs. Gable screamed, dropping the tray of cookies.

"Lily!" Vanessa shrieked, instantly dropping to her knees and grabbing her daughter, pulling her under the heavy oak kitchen island.

"Stay down!" Geno yelled, bursting into the kitchen with his sidearm drawn, his dark suit jacket already stained with crimson from a grazing wound on his shoulder. "They breached the back gate! Moretti’s men!"

"How many?" Vanessa cried, holding Lily tightly against her chest as the little girl began to sob hysterically.

"At least a dozen!" Geno gritted out, firing three rapid shots through the kitchen doorway as heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway. "They cut the power lines and killed the gate guards! Boss is on his way, but we have to hold the safe room!"

Explosions echoed through the front foyer—stun grenades. The house filled with acrid smoke and the deafening clatter of automatic rifles.

"Move! Now!" Geno ordered, stepping into the corridor to provide suppressive fire.

Vanessa picked up Lily in her arms, running as fast as her legs could carry her toward the hidden security room concealed behind the library bookcase. Bullets whined through the air, splintering mahogany paneling and shattering priceless antiques around them.

She made it to the library, her chest burning, her heart pounding with raw terror. She punched the seven-digit code into the keypad hidden behind a leather-bound volume of Shakespeare. The heavy steel door slid open with a soft hiss.

"In! Get in, Lily!" Vanessa cried, shoving her daughter into the reinforced room.

Before Vanessa could step inside herself, a heavy hand grabbed her by the hair from behind, yanked her viciously backward, throwing her onto the hardwood floor.

Vanessa screamed as she hit the ground, rolling over to face her attacker.

It was Victor. His nose was crooked and wrapped in surgical tape, his eyes filled with a psychotic, murderous rage. Behind him stood three armed men with black tactical gear.

"Got you, you little bitch," Victor hissed, pointing a heavy pistol directly at her chest. "Let's see how tough Santoro is when I send him your head in a box."

"Mommy!" Lily shrieked from inside the safe room, trying to run out.

"Stay inside, Lily! Press the red button! Close the door!" Vanessa screamed, kicking wildly at Victor’s shins.

Lily, crying uncontrollably, remembered what Luca had taught her during their house tour. She hit the big red button on the inside wall. The heavy steel door began to slide shut.

"No!" Victor yelled, aiming his gun at the closing door.

Vanessa scrambled forward, grabbing Victor’s leg with all her strength, biting hard into his calf through his heavy trousers.

Victor roared in pain, turning his attention back to Vanessa. He brought the butt of his heavy pistol down toward her temple.

Everything went dark.
