Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Gate

By eleven o'clock, the weather had turned vicious. A cold, driving sleet beat against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the estate. The grand driveway was lined with four black SUVs, their engines idling silently, exhaust rising like grey ghosts in the freezing air.
Vanessa stood by the window in the study, watching through the glass as two dark sedans pulled up outside the heavy iron gates of the estate. She could see Mark sitting in the back seat of the front car, looking pale, shrunken, and battered. Beside him sat a heavily built man with a scarred jaw and an expensive fur-collared coat—Victor, Don Moretti’s notorious enforcer.
Luca stood beside her, adjusted his dark leather gloves. He looked completely unfazed, a statue of absolute authority.
"Stay inside with Mrs. Gable," Luca instructed, his tone leaving no room for argument. "This won't take long."
"Luca, please," Vanessa begged, catching his arm. Her fingers sank into the heavy wool of his sleeve. "If this man is dangerous, don't go out there. Just let Mark have whatever money he wants. I'll take Lily and leave the city. You don't have to bleed for us."
Luca stopped. He looked down at her hand on his arm, then up into her terrified, desperate eyes. For a long moment, the coldness in his face softened into something intensely human.
"I spent ten years regretting letting you walk away, Vanessa," he said softly, laying his gloved hand over hers. "I am not nineteen anymore. I don't run, and I don't negotiate with men who terrorize women and children. Stay inside. Trust me."
Before she could protest further, he turned and stepped out into the freezing storm, accompanied by Geno and four armed guards whose coats bulged suspiciously.
Vanessa couldn't stay away from the window. She watched as Luca walked down the long, snow-covered driveway, his posture regal and unflinching against the howling wind.
At the gate, the door of the front sedan opened, and Victor stepped out, followed by Mark, who was trembling so violently he could barely stand on the icy pavement.
"Santoro!" Victor shouted over the wind, a cruel smile twisting his scarred face. "You're taking a lot of interest in trash that belongs to the Moretti family!"
Luca stopped ten feet away from the gate, his hands resting casually in his coat pockets. "Victor. You're trespassing on Santoro territory. State your business before I have my men remove you permanently."
"My business is that piece of crap standing next to me," Victor sneered, jerking a thumb at Mark. "He owes our boss two hundred grand. You can't just buy out his papers and hide him under your skirt, Santoro. Don Moretti wants the money, or he wants the girl's custody rights transferred to us as collateral."
Mark whimpered. "Victor, please, I told you I'd sign whatever you wanted—"
"Shut up!" Victor growled, slapping Mark across the face with enough force to knock the smaller man to his knees in the slush.
Through the window, Vanessa gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth.
Luca didn't move an inch, but his eyes narrowed into two slits of black ice. "You hit a man in front of my gates. You demand collateral from a child. You have lost your mind, Victor."
"I have the backing of the Moretti family!" Victor boasted, reaching inside his heavy coat. "Sign over the northern docks, Santoro, or we take the kid today. We know where she goes to school. We know where her mother works. You can't watch them twenty-four hours a day."
It was the ultimate mistake.
Before Victor’s hand could even locate the handle of his weapon, Luca moved. With terrifying speed, he stepped forward, reached through the iron bars of the gate, and grabbed Victor by his fur collar, slamming his face violently against the iron forged bars.
The sound of breaking bone cracked through the icy air.
Victor screamed, dropping to his knees, blood pouring from his shattered nose onto the snow. Behind him, the men in the sedans instantly reached for their weapons, but they stopped dead when the muffled clicks of a dozen assault rifles echoed from the tree line around the estate.
Luca’s perimeter guards had stepped out from the shadows, their weapons trained directly on the two vehicles.
Luca stood over the bleeding enforcer, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper that carried clearly even through the closed windows of the study.
"Tell Moretti that if he ever mentions the child again, I will burn his club to the ground with him inside it," Luca said, his tone devoid of all emotion. He turned his gaze to Mark, who was trembling violently in the snow, terrified out of his mind.
Luca threw a heavy packet of legal documents onto Mark’s wet lap.
"Sign," Luca commanded. "Now."
With shaking, blood-stained hands, Mark grabbed a pen from his pocket and scribbled his signature on every line indicated. He thrust the papers back toward Luca as if they were made of fire.
"I... I signed it!" Mark sobbed. "I signed everything! Just let me go!"
Luca picked up the papers, verified the signatures with a brief glance, and handed them to Geno. Then he looked down at Mark one last time.
"Get out of my city," Luca said. "If you are still here when the sun sets tomorrow, Geno will hunt you down like a dog."
Victor was dragged back into the sedan by his terrified driver, and the two cars sped away, their tires spinning wildly on the slick asphalt.
Luca stood in the freezing rain for a long moment, collecting himself, before turning and walking back toward the mansion. When he entered the warmth of the foyer, Vanessa was waiting for him, her face pale, her heart hammering wildly in her chest.
He took off his leather gloves, tossing them onto the marble table. "It's done. He signed. He has no legal right to Lily ever again."

Vanessa looked at the papers in Geno’s hands, then back at Luca. "At what cost, Luca? You just declared war on the Moretti family for us."
"They declared war the moment they threatened you," Luca said calmly, stepping closer to her. "And as long as you are under my roof, Vanessa, no one in this world will ever hurt you again."
