Chapter 3 - The Offer and the Threat

Morning broke over the Santoro estate in shades of gold and pale blue, casting long shadows across the snow-covered gardens. Vanessa awoke in a bed larger than her entire previous apartment, wrapped in silk sheets that felt like air against her skin. For a few brief seconds, she forgot where she was, believing it was all a wonderful, impossible dream.

Then she heard the soft chatter of Lily coming from down the hall, accompanied by the clink of silverware, and reality rushed back.

She washed her face with warm water in a bathroom clad in Italian marble, marveling at the endless row of luxury toiletries placed there for her use. On the chair near the door lay a set of brand-new clothes: a soft cashmere sweater in cream, tailored wool trousers, and a pair of leather boots that looked custom-made. A small note rested on top of the stack, written in precise, elegant calligraphy:

For the day ahead. Eat well. We have guests at eleven. - L

When Vanessa descended the staircase, she found Lily sitting at a long mahogany dining table, wearing a sweet pink dress that looked entirely new, enthusiastically devouring a plate of fluffy pancakes topped with fresh berries. Luca sat at the head of the table, dressed in a sharp charcoal three-piece suit, reading a folded newspaper with a cup of black coffee at his elbow.

He looked up as Vanessa entered, his eyes lingering on how well the cream sweater suited her. A subtle warmth flickered in his dark eyes before he masked it with his usual composure.

"Good morning, Vanessa," he said, rising from his chair to pull out a seat for her. "I hope you slept well."

"Luca, all these clothes... the food... you shouldn't have," Vanessa said softly, sitting down. "It's too much."

"It's barely enough," he countered smoothly, returning to his seat. "Eat. You need your strength."

"Why? What's happening at eleven?" she asked, eyeing him with growing suspicion.

Luca took a slow sip of his coffee. "Mark's lawyer is coming. Along with a representative from the family court."

Vanessa’s heart dropped. "Mark? He's coming here?"

"He won't be entering the house," Luca replied coldly. "He will be sitting in a car at the front gate, signing the papers my legal team prepared. Once he signs, he waives all parental rights to Lily permanently. In exchange, I wipe forty percent of his total debt and agree not to hand his tax fraud documentation to the federal prosecutor."

"And if he refuses?"

Luca’s expression turned dangerously blank. "He won't refuse. Geno spent two hours with him last night explaining the alternative. Mark is a coward, Vanessa. Cowards always choose survival over pride."

Before Vanessa could process this, a soft knock echoed from the heavy double doors of the dining room. Geno stepped inside, holding a encrypted satellite phone. His face was grim.

"Boss," Geno said, his tone tight. "We have a problem."

Luca raised a hand to stop Geno from speaking further in front of Lily. He stood up smoothly. "Excuse me for a moment, Vanessa. Eat your breakfast."

He walked out into the grand hallway, Geno following close behind. Vanessa, driven by an instinct she couldn't ignore, quietly slipped out of her chair and followed them to the heavy archway, staying out of sight behind a tall marble statue.

"Speak," Luca ordered.

"It's Don Moretti," Geno whispered harshly. "He heard about what happened at the mall yesterday. He knows you brought a woman and a child into the compound. Moretti is claiming that Mark owes money to his crew, not just our front companies. He's saying you intercepted his debt collection and interfered with family business."

"Moretti is an old dog barking at clouds," Luca spat softly. "Mark’s debts were sold to three different shell corporations last month. I bought all three. Moretti has no legal or street standing here."

"That doesn't matter to him, Luca," Geno warned. "Moretti is looking for a reason to break the truce. He's sending his lieutenant, Victor, to the meeting today. They're going to try to use the girl's custody as leverage to force you to surrender the northern shipping docks."

Vanessa gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. Her heart thundered against her ribs. She was the spark. Her pathetic, broken life was being used as an excuse to start a mob war.

Luca’s voice grew dropped to a deadly register. "If Victor so much as breathes near Vanessa or Lily, I will personally feed him to the fish in the harbor. Tell the perimeter team to double the guard. Bring up the armored vehicles from the lower garage. If Moretti wants a war over a child's safety, I will give him one that eradicates his entire lineage."

Vanessa pulled back into the shadows, horror cold and absolute spreading through her veins. Luca was protecting her, yes, but he was pulling her into a world of bloodshed and chaos that she had spent years trying to avoid.

She walked back to the dining room, looking at Lily, who was happily wiping syrup off her chin with a napkin.

I have to get us out of here, Vanessa thought frantically. Before someone gets killed because of us.
