CHAPTER 5 – THE WAR FOR THE OLD MAN’S LEGACY

The letter was only one page.

One page that had survived twenty-five years of lies.

One page that carried the truth someone had killed to bury.

And yet, when Kang Ji-ho finished reading it, he realized something terrifying.

The letter did not explain the past.

It explained the future.

Because Emily Bennett had known the enemy would eventually come back.

She knew that secrets never truly died.

They waited.

They hid.

They watched.

And when the right moment arrived...

They returned.

The room remained silent.

Nobody moved.

Chloe stood beside the table, staring at the letter.

“My mother wrote that?”

Ji-ho nodded.

“Yes.”

“She knew she was going to die?”

His silence answered her.

Chloe looked away.

For years, she had imagined her mother’s final moments.

A hospital room.

A car accident.

A stranger’s mistake.

Anything except this.

Anything except knowing that someone had taken her life.

Because of a secret.

“She was trying to protect me.”

Min-jun’s voice was soft.

Chloe looked at him.

“She was.”

The old man’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She always believed that love meant carrying someone else’s pain before they had to feel it.”

Chloe closed her eyes.

That sounded like her mother.

Because that was exactly what Chloe had spent her entire life doing.

Taking care of others.

Putting herself last.

Ji-ho placed the letter on the table.

“There is one thing we still don’t know.”

Chloe looked at him.

“What?”

“Who Emily was afraid of.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I have an idea.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Ji-ho’s expression hardened.

“Speak.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Your uncle was involved.”

“We already know that.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

The room became tense.

“Kang Seung-ho was not the person controlling everything.”

Ji-ho stared.

“Then who was?”

Daniel looked at Min-jun.

The old man’s face changed.

A look of disbelief.

Then fear.

“No.”

Ji-ho noticed.

“Father?”

Min-jun slowly stood.

For the first time, Chloe saw something she never expected.

Fear in his eyes.

“Your grandfather.”

Silence.

Nobody spoke.

Ji-ho looked confused.

“My grandfather died before I was born.”

Min-jun nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then how?”

The old man looked toward the window.

“Because some people do not need to be alive to destroy lives.”

Twenty-five years earlier, before the Kang empire became what it was...

There was another man.

Kang Tae-hyun.

The founder of the family business.

A man respected by the public.

A man praised as a visionary.

But behind closed doors, he believed something different.

He believed power belonged only to those strong enough to take it.

He taught his sons a brutal lesson:

Kindness was weakness.

Mercy was stupidity.

Family was only valuable if it served the empire.

Min-jun rejected that philosophy.

He wanted a different future.

A company that protected people.

A family built on trust.

That made him dangerous.

Because the greatest threat to a cruel system was always someone who refused to become cruel.

“The documents Emily found…” Ji-ho said slowly.

Min-jun nodded.

“They were not just about stolen money.”

“What were they?”

“Evidence that my father had built the empire using illegal operations.”

Chloe stared.

“So your own father…”

“Yes.”

Min-jun’s voice became heavy.

“He created the monster I spent my life trying to destroy.”

Ji-ho looked down.

Everything he believed about his family was changing.

The empire he inherited.

The power he controlled.

The reputation that followed him.

It was all built on a foundation of secrets.

The enemy moved before they could prepare.

At midnight, every major news network received the same information.

Documents.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Everything.

The headline spread across the world.

KANG EMPIRE ACCUSED OF CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES AND FAMILY CORRUPTION

The public reacted instantly.

Investors panicked.

Business partners disappeared.

Government agencies launched investigations.

The empire that had stood for decades began collapsing within hours.

Inside the headquarters, chaos erupted.

Employees shouted.

Executives demanded answers.

The board turned against Ji-ho.

“They will destroy us!”

“They will freeze our accounts!”

“We need someone else to lead!”

Ji-ho stood silently.

Watching.

Listening.

Because he knew.

This was not an attack.

It was a takeover.

Someone wanted the Kang empire weakened.

Not destroyed.

Controlled.

The person who walked into the room made everyone silent.

Kang Seung-ho.

Ji-ho’s uncle.

He looked calm.

Almost amused.

“You should have listened to me.”

Ji-ho stared.

“You did this.”

Seung-ho smiled.

“Do you have proof?”

The same words.

Again.

Ji-ho stepped closer.

“You destroyed my father.”

“No.”

Seung-ho laughed.

“Your father destroyed himself.”

Chloe, standing behind Ji-ho, felt anger rise.

“How can you say that?”

Everyone looked at her.

Seung-ho smiled.

“So this is the girl.”

Ji-ho immediately moved between them.

“Careful.”

Seung-ho looked at him.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“You finally found something you care about.”

Ji-ho’s face changed.

Because Seung-ho was right.

For years, Ji-ho protected the empire.

Now he was protecting Chloe.

And everyone noticed.

That night, Chloe made a decision.

She packed a small bag.

When Ji-ho found her, she was standing near the entrance.

“You’re leaving.”

It was not a question.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because this is my fault.”

Ji-ho frowned.

“No.”

“If I had never helped your father…”

“This would still happen.”

“If I had never met you…”

“Chloe.”

His voice stopped her.

She looked at him.

“You think you are the reason this happened.”

He stepped closer.

“You are not.”

“Then what am I?”

Ji-ho was quiet.

Then he answered honestly.

“The reason I finally want to end it.”

The words surprised her.

He continued.

“For fifteen years, I only knew how to fight.”

His eyes softened.

“Every enemy.

Every betrayal.

Every person who tried to take something from me.”

A pause.

“But you showed me something.”

“What?”

“That protecting people matters more than protecting power.”

Chloe looked away.

“You don’t even know me.”

“I know enough.”

“How?”

“Because you fed my father when the world ignored him.”

Silence.

“You gave kindness to a man who had nothing to offer you.”

His voice lowered.

“People like you are rare.”

Before Chloe could answer...

The lights went out.

Every light.

The entire building became dark.

Security alarms started screaming.

Then came the sound of gunfire.

The war had arrived.

Men attacked from every entrance.

Not random criminals.

Trained soldiers.

People who knew the building.

People who knew the security system.

Someone inside had opened the doors.

Ji-ho immediately grabbed Chloe’s hand.

“Stay close.”

“I can fight.”

He looked at her.

“You are unbelievable.”

“What?”

“You are standing in the middle of a mafia war and your first thought is that you can fight.”

Despite everything...

He almost smiled.

Then his expression hardened.

“Behind me.”

They moved through the dark halls.

Every step was danger.

Every shadow could hide an enemy.

Until they reached the old archive room.

The door opened.

And someone was waiting.

Daniel.

Chloe froze.

“Daniel?”

Ji-ho raised his weapon.

“Move away from her.”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I’m not your enemy.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You betrayed me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you here?”

Daniel looked at the files in his hand.

“Because I found the last piece.”

He handed Ji-ho a folder.

Inside was one final document.

A birth record.

Ji-ho read it.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“What?”

Chloe looked at him.

He looked at her.

And for the first time...

Kang Ji-ho looked completely shocked.

“This is impossible.”

“What is it?”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Your father.”

Chloe froze.

“My father?”

Ji-ho looked at the document.

“Your biological father was not a stranger.”

The room went silent.

“He was a member of the Kang family.”

Chloe felt the world disappear.

“No.”

Ji-ho looked at her with pain in his eyes.

“Your father was my uncle.”

Her breath stopped.

The impossible truth.

The reason their lives had always been connected.

The reason Emily knew the Kang family.

The reason someone wanted Chloe gone.

She was not an outsider.

She was part of the legacy.

Then the final message appeared on the computer screen.

A video.

Automatically activated.

An old man appeared.

Kang Tae-hyun.

The grandfather Ji-ho thought was dead.

The founder of the empire.

The architect of everything.

His voice filled the room.

“If you are watching this…”

The old man smiled.

“Then the Kang family has finally discovered the truth.”

Ji-ho stared.

Because the impossible had become reality.

His grandfather was alive.

And he had one final plan.

May you like

A plan that involved Chloe Bennett.

A plan that would decide who inherited the Kang empire.
