CHAPTER 4 – THE WOMAN WHO STOOD AGAINST THE MAFIA

The first rule of surviving a storm was knowing when to run.

Everyone in Chicago knew that.

When the wind became too violent, people closed their windows.

When the streets flooded, people stayed inside.

When powerful men started fighting...

Smart people disappeared.

But Chloe Bennett had never been very good at disappearing.

She had spent her entire life walking toward the people everyone else walked away from.

And now, standing in the middle of the Kang family’s war, she was beginning to understand something terrifying.

The storm was not coming.

She was already standing inside it.

The photograph remained on Ji-ho’s desk.

A single image.

A single betrayal.

The person staring back at him was someone he had trusted for fifteen years.

Someone who stood beside him through the darkest moments.

Someone who knew every weakness of the Kang empire.

Daniel Park.

Ji-ho looked at the photograph.

Then at the man standing across from him.

Daniel.

The same man who had delivered the information.

The same man who had protected him since he was young.

The same man who had just become the greatest question in his life.

“Explain.”

Ji-ho’s voice was quiet.

That was what made it dangerous.

Daniel did not move.

“I knew you would find out eventually.”

The room went silent.

Ji-ho’s eyes hardened.

“So it’s true.”

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.”

For fifteen years, Daniel had been the closest person to Ji-ho.

Closer than employees.

Closer than business partners.

Sometimes even closer than family.

“You ordered the men at the diner.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel took a slow breath.

“Because I needed to know if Chloe Bennett was connected to your father.”

Ji-ho stood.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

“You threatened an innocent woman.”

“I never intended for her to be harmed.”

“That is not an answer.”

Daniel looked at him.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Ji-ho laughed softly.

A cold, empty laugh.

“Everyone who betrays me says the same thing.”

Across town, Chloe sat beside Min-jun in the private residence.

She had a hundred questions.

Maybe a thousand.

But one question hurt more than all the others.

“Did you know my mother?”

Min-jun looked at her.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

Most people would have lied.

They would have softened the truth.

Not him.

“She was one of the bravest people I ever knew.”

Chloe swallowed.

“What happened to her?”

Min-jun looked toward the window.

“Your mother discovered something dangerous.”

“The betrayal?”

He nodded.

“She found evidence that someone was moving money through companies connected to my family.”

“Your brother?”

“Yes.”

Chloe looked down.

“And she died because of it.”

Min-jun’s silence was enough.

A tear escaped before she could stop it.

“All these years…”

Her voice broke.

“I thought she just left me.”

Min-jun’s expression softened.

“She never left you.”

Chloe looked at him.

“She wanted to come back.”

The old man’s voice trembled.

“She wrote a letter for you.”

Chloe froze.

“A letter?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

Min-jun closed his eyes.

“I don’t know.”

The answer hurt.

“But I know who took it.”

Kang Ji-ho arrived moments later.

Chloe immediately noticed something.

Something was wrong.

The confident man from yesterday was gone.

The man standing in front of her looked exhausted.

“You found out about my mother.”

It was not a question.

Ji-ho nodded.

“Yes.”

“And?”

He looked at her.

“She was trying to save my family.”

Chloe’s eyes filled with anger.

“Your family?”

Ji-ho became still.

“Yes.”

“She died because of your family.”

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

Chloe stood.

“My whole life I had to believe she was gone because of some accident.”

Her voice shook.

“Do you understand what that does to a child?”

Ji-ho said nothing.

“My grandmother raised me. She worked until she could barely walk. She skipped medicine so I could eat.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“And somewhere out there, powerful people knew the truth.”

She stepped closer.

“And they let us suffer.”

Ji-ho accepted every word.

Because he knew she was right.

“I’m sorry.”

Chloe looked at him.

The apology surprised her.

Not because it was impossible.

Because men like him rarely gave them.

“I don’t need your apology.”

“What do you need?”

She looked at him.

“The truth.”

That night, Ji-ho gathered the entire Kang inner circle.

The meeting took place in a private room beneath the headquarters.

Every major member of the organization was present.

Men who controlled companies.

Men who controlled territories.

Men who had spent years protecting the Kang name.

Ji-ho stood at the head of the table.

“Twenty-five years ago, my father disappeared.”

Nobody spoke.

“We believed it was an attack from outside.”

He looked around.

“We were wrong.”

The room became tense.

“The enemy was already inside.”

A man lowered his eyes.

Another shifted nervously.

Ji-ho noticed everything.

Fear.

Guilt.

Secrets.

“The person responsible will be found.”

A voice interrupted.

“You’re accusing family?”

Everyone turned.

Kang Seung-ho.

Ji-ho’s uncle.

The man who had helped build the empire.

The man who had been waiting quietly.

“You have no proof.”

Ji-ho stared at him.

“Not yet.”

Seung-ho smiled.

“Then be careful with accusations.”

Ji-ho stepped closer.

“Funny.”

“What?”

“You sound exactly like someone who is afraid.”

The room froze.

Seung-ho’s smile disappeared.

Later that night, Chloe walked alone through the garden.

She needed air.

Everything had become too much.

Her mother.

The Kang family.

The danger.

The secrets.

She heard footsteps behind her.

She turned.

Ji-ho.

“You shouldn’t walk alone.”

She sighed.

“Do you always appear like that?”

“Like what?”

“Like you’re part of the shadows.”

For a second, he almost smiled.

Almost.

“My life has been in the shadows for a long time.”

Chloe looked at him.

“Why did you become this person?”

The question surprised him.

Nobody asked him that.

They asked what he owned.

What he controlled.

What he could do.

Nobody asked why.

“Because I had no choice.”

“That’s what everyone says.”

Ji-ho looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“My whole life, people told me they had no choice.”

She looked toward the city.

“My mother had no choice. My grandmother had no choice. Everyone was just surviving.”

A pause.

“But surviving is not the same as living.”

Those words stayed with him.

Because Ji-ho realized something.

Chloe was not afraid of his power.

She was afraid of what power did to people.

The next morning, the attack happened.

It was fast.

Professional.

Planned.

The car carrying Chloe and Min-jun was forced off the road.

Glass shattered.

Tires screamed.

People shouted.

Chloe fell against the seat.

Then she saw him.

Ji-ho.

He had thrown himself between her and the broken window.

Protecting her.

Without hesitation.

Without thinking.

The man everyone feared had used his own body as a shield.

When the attackers fled, security arrived.

But Chloe could only stare at Ji-ho.

“You could have died.”

He looked at her.

“So could you.”

“Why?”

His answer came immediately.

“Because someone should have protected your mother.”

The words broke something inside her.

Because for the first time...

She saw the guilt he carried.

Not the power.

Not the empire.

The man.

That evening, the truth about Daniel finally came out.

Daniel had not betrayed Ji-ho for money.

He had done it because he was protecting a secret.

A secret even Ji-ho did not know.

Daniel placed an old envelope on the table.

“I found this twenty-five years ago.”

Ji-ho stared.

“What is it?”

“A letter.”

His hands froze.

“From Emily Bennett.”

Chloe was standing nearby.

Her breath stopped.

“My mother?”

Daniel nodded.

“She wrote it before she died.”

Ji-ho opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a single page.

A handwritten message.

The first line made him freeze.

Min-jun, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.

Ji-ho continued reading.

His expression changed.

Because the truth inside that letter was impossible.

The betrayal.

The accident.

The person behind everything.

And the reason Chloe Bennett was never supposed to meet Kang Ji-ho.

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

A warning.

A warning that changed everything.

Protect my daughter. The person who destroyed our families will come for her next.

Chloe looked up.

The room was silent.

Someone had spent twenty-five years hiding the truth.

Someone had killed to protect a secret.

And now...

That person knew Chloe was alive.

Ji-ho folded the letter.

His eyes became cold.

The mafia boss returned.

But this time, he was fighting for something different.

Not money.

Not power.

Not revenge.

A woman who had shown his father kindness.

May you like

A woman whose mother had sacrificed everything.

A woman who had somehow become the one person capable of saving the Kang family.
