CHAPTER 3 – THE SECRET BEHIND THE KANG EMPIRE

The name Kang had always been associated with power.

But power was never built on money alone.

Money could buy buildings.

Money could buy companies.

Money could buy loyalty.

But money could not erase betrayal.

And Kang Ji-ho knew that better than anyone.

Because fifteen years ago, he learned the most painful lesson a person could learn:

The people closest to you are sometimes the ones holding the knife.

The underground floor beneath the Kang headquarters had no windows.

No decorations.

No signs of wealth.

Only silence.

It was where the family kept the things they did not want the world to see.

Old documents.

Old photographs.

Old secrets.

Ji-ho stood in front of a large metal cabinet while Daniel placed a folder on the table.

“Everything we found about Chloe Bennett.”

Ji-ho opened it.

The first page contained basic information.

Age.

Occupation.

Address.

Family.

Nothing unusual.

A waitress.

A granddaughter.

A woman living a quiet life.

But the next page changed everything.

Her mother.

Emily Bennett.

Ji-ho stared at the name.

He knew it.

Not from the news.

Not from records.

From his childhood.

A memory buried so deep he had almost convinced himself it was a dream.

A woman with warm eyes.

A woman who used to bring him candy when he was a child.

A woman who spoke Korean with his father.

A woman who his father trusted more than anyone.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

“Tell me again what happened to her.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Officially?”

“Yes.”

“Car accident. Twenty-five years ago.”

“Officially.”

Daniel understood.

Ji-ho did not ask for official stories.

He asked for the truth.

Daniel opened another file.

“Unofficially, there are missing records. The police report was altered. Witness statements disappeared.”

Ji-ho’s eyes narrowed.

“Who had access?”

Daniel paused.

“Your uncle.”

The room became colder.

Kang Seung-ho.

His father’s younger brother.

The man who helped run the empire while Min-jun was gone.

The man who comforted Ji-ho when his father disappeared.

The man who always said:

“Family protects family.”

Ji-ho laughed quietly.

A humorless sound.

“Family.”

The word felt poisonous.

Twenty-five years earlier.

Before Kang Ji-ho became the feared businessman everyone knew.

Before the empire became a global force.

There was only a father and son.

Min-jun Kang had built his company from nothing.

He was not born rich.

He was not born powerful.

He was born in a poor neighborhood in Busan, where children learned quickly that survival belonged to those who worked hardest.

Min-jun worked.

Every day.

Every night.

He built a small shipping business.

Then another.

Then another.

But unlike other men who became powerful, Min-jun never forgot where he came from.

He helped struggling families.

He paid workers fairly.

He protected people who had no one.

That made him respected.

But it also made enemies.

Because in a world where everyone wanted control...

A good man with power was dangerous.

Emily Bennett met Min-jun when she was twenty-three.

She was an American translator working with Korean businesses.

Everyone thought she was just an employee.

They were wrong.

Emily was brilliant.

She noticed things others ignored.

Numbers that did not match.

Contracts that were suspicious.

Money disappearing from company accounts.

And one day...

She discovered the truth.

Someone inside the Kang empire was stealing millions.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

When she told Min-jun, he refused to believe it.

Not because he thought Emily was wrong.

Because he knew what would happen if she was right.

The person stealing from him was someone he loved.

His own brother.

Present day.

Chloe sat across from her grandmother, unable to move.

“My mother knew them?”

Mae nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because your mother begged me not to.”

“Why?”

Mae looked down.

“Because she was afraid.”

Chloe swallowed.

“My mother was afraid of the Kang family?”

“No.”

Mae’s voice softened.

“She was afraid of what would happen if the Kang family learned the truth.”

“What truth?”

Mae’s eyes filled with sadness.

“That your mother was the only person who knew who betrayed Min-jun Kang.”

Chloe felt dizzy.

The room seemed smaller.

“You’re saying my mother knew the person who destroyed their family?”

“Yes.”

“And then she died.”

Mae nodded.

“Three days after she planned to tell him.”

Silence.

Chloe stood up.

“No.”

Mae looked at her.

“Chloe.”

“No.”

She backed away.

“My entire life I thought my mother died because of a random accident.”

Mae’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted you to believe that.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.”

Chloe laughed bitterly.

“A normal life?”

She looked around the tiny apartment.

The broken furniture.

The unpaid bills.

“Grandma, we were never normal.”

Mae closed her eyes.

“I know.”

That same night, Kang Ji-ho visited his father.

Min-jun sat in the garden behind the private residence.

The old man looked peaceful.

But Ji-ho knew him.

He knew his father was carrying pain.

“You knew.”

Min-jun did not turn around.

“About Chloe?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

“How long?”

“Since the first time I saw her.”

Ji-ho stared at him.

“You knew who she was?”

Min-jun nodded.

“Her eyes.”

Ji-ho frowned.

“What?”

“She has her mother’s eyes.”

The answer hurt.

Because Ji-ho remembered Emily too.

A woman who treated him like family.

A woman who disappeared from his life overnight.

“I searched for you for fifteen years.”

Min-jun looked down.

“I know.”

“I thought you were dead.”

“I wanted you to believe that.”

The words cut deeper than Ji-ho expected.

“Why?”

Min-jun closed his eyes.

“Because if Seung-ho believed I was dead, he would stop looking for me.”

Ji-ho froze.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“You knew your own brother betrayed you?”

“I suspected.”

“Then why disappear?”

Min-jun looked at his son.

“Because I found proof.”

The garden went silent.

“What proof?”

Min-jun’s expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

The kind Ji-ho had not seen since he was a child.

“Your uncle did not act alone.”

Ji-ho stared.

“Who helped him?”

Min-jun looked toward the darkness.

“Someone inside our family.”

The next morning, Chloe arrived at Rosie’s Corner Diner.

But something was wrong.

The moment she entered, she knew.

Earl was standing behind the counter.

Two strangers sat in the corner.

They were not customers.

They were watching her.

“Chloe.”

Earl’s voice was nervous.

“What happened?”

He looked away.

“Someone came looking for you.”

Her heart tightened.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did they want?”

Earl swallowed.

“They asked about the old man.”

Before Chloe could respond, the two men stood.

One approached.

“Miss Bennett.”

She stepped back.

“Can I help you?”

The man smiled.

But there was nothing friendly about it.

“You already helped someone.”

Chloe felt cold.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you should have minded your own business.”

The diner became silent.

Then the door opened.

A voice came from behind them.

“Interesting.”

Everyone turned.

Kang Ji-ho stood there.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

The two men immediately changed.

Because they recognized him.

And fear appeared on their faces.

Ji-ho walked forward.

“You entered my city.”

The men said nothing.

“You threatened an innocent woman.”

Still silence.

Ji-ho looked at them.

“And you expected me not to notice?”

The atmosphere changed.

Chloe realized something.

This was the man Daniel warned her about.

The man who ruled shadows.

The man who could destroy people without raising his voice.

One of the men stepped forward.

“This has nothing to do with you, Kang.”

Ji-ho smiled slightly.

“That is where you are wrong.”

He looked at Chloe.

Then back at them.

“Everything involving her has to do with me.”

Later, inside the car, Chloe stared out the window.

She was angry.

“You followed me.”

Ji-ho looked ahead.

“Yes.”

“I didn’t ask you to protect me.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

He was quiet.

Finally, he answered:

“Because twenty-five years ago, someone failed to protect your mother.”

Chloe turned.

“What?”

Ji-ho looked at her.

“And I refuse to let history repeat itself.”

The words were not from a mafia boss.

Not from a powerful man.

They came from someone carrying guilt.

Someone who had lost someone before.

Someone who knew what it felt like to arrive too late.

That evening, the final piece of the puzzle arrived.

Daniel entered Ji-ho’s office.

“We found the person who ordered the men at the diner.”

Ji-ho looked up.

“Who?”

Daniel placed a photograph on the desk.

Ji-ho stared.

The blood drained from his face.

Because the person in the photograph was impossible.

Someone who had been beside him for fifteen years.

Someone he trusted.

Someone who knew every secret of the Kang family.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“It was not an enemy.”

Ji-ho’s jaw tightened.

“It was someone inside.”

He looked at the photograph again.

And for the first time in many years...

May you like

Kang Ji-ho felt something he thought he had buried forever.

Betrayal.
