CHAPTER 2 – THE SON WHO RULED THE SHADOWS

The first thing Chloe Bennett noticed about Kang Ji-ho was not his expensive suit.

Not the men standing behind him.

Not the way every customer in Rosie’s Corner Diner suddenly stopped talking when he entered.

It was his eyes.

They were cold.

Not cruel.

Not empty.

Cold in the way a person became when they had spent years surviving things nobody else could imagine.

Chloe had seen those eyes before.

In Min-jun.

The old man who held a piece of bread like it was a treasure.

The old man who looked afraid of taking up space in the world.

Father and son were completely different.

But somehow...

They carried the same loneliness.

“Thank you,” Ji-ho repeated.

Chloe blinked.

“You already said that.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you still standing here?”

A few customers nearby almost choked.

Nobody spoke to Kang Ji-ho like that.

Daniel Park, standing behind him, looked shocked for the first time in years.

But Ji-ho did something unexpected.

He smiled.

Only slightly.

Barely enough for anyone else to notice.

“My apologies.”

Chloe crossed her arms.

“For what?”

“For making you uncomfortable.”

That answer surprised her.

She expected arrogance.

Power.

A man who walked into a small diner and expected everyone to bow.

Instead, he apologized.

It confused her.

“Your father is okay, right?” Chloe asked.

Ji-ho’s expression changed.

“Yes.”

A small breath escaped her.

“Good.”

That was all she cared about.

Not money.

Not gratitude.

Not whatever powerful family this man belonged to.

Just that Min-jun was okay.

Ji-ho noticed.

“You were worried about him.”

“Of course I was.”

“Even though you barely knew him?”

Chloe looked at him.

“Does someone have to know a person before they deserve kindness?”

The question hit harder than she intended.

Ji-ho said nothing.

Because nobody had ever asked him that.

Not in thirty years.

The world knew Kang Ji-ho by many names.

Some called him a businessman.

Some called him a strategist.

Some called him a monster.

In Seoul’s underground world, his name was spoken quietly.

The Kang Organization controlled shipping companies, private security firms, financial investments, and countless businesses across Asia and America.

Officially, it was a global empire.

Unofficially...

It was something much darker.

A world built on loyalty, fear, and secrets.

Ji-ho had inherited that world when he was twenty-eight.

After his father disappeared.

He had spent fifteen years searching.

Fifteen years believing someone had betrayed the only person who ever protected him.

And now...

His father had been found sitting under a broken neon sign outside a diner.

Saved by a waitress earning barely enough money to survive.

Life had a strange sense of humor.

“Where is Mr. Kang now?” Chloe asked.

Ji-ho looked toward the door.

“He is resting.”

“Can I see him?”

The question surprised everyone.

Daniel immediately looked at Ji-ho.

Most people wanted something from Kang Ji-ho.

Money.

Protection.

Power.

Nobody asked to see his father.

Just because they cared.

Ji-ho studied her.

“You want nothing?”

Chloe frowned.

“What?”

“You helped him without knowing who he was.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t want compensation?”

“No.”

“You don’t want a favor?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Chloe looked confused.

“Because he was hungry.”

The simplicity of her answer disturbed him.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it was something he had forgotten existed.

A world where people helped because someone needed help.

Not because they wanted something.

That afternoon, Chloe visited Min-jun at a private medical facility.

She almost turned around when she saw the building.

It was not a hospital.

It looked more like a luxury hotel.

The marble floors were polished.

The staff wore expensive uniforms.

Security guards stood everywhere.

She felt completely out of place.

A woman approached her.

“Miss Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“Mr. Kang is waiting.”

Chloe followed her upstairs.

When the door opened, she saw Min-jun sitting beside the window.

He looked different.

Cleaner.

Healthier.

But still the same gentle man.

When he saw her, his face brightened.

“Chloe.”

She smiled.

“You remember my name.”

The old man laughed softly.

“I remember the person who gave me warmth when I had none.”

Her heart tightened.

She sat beside him.

“How are you feeling?”

“Better.”

“Are you eating?”

“Yes.”

“Really?”

Min-jun smiled.

“You sound like my wife.”

Chloe laughed.

For the first time since meeting him, he looked peaceful.

Then his expression became serious.

“Chloe.”

“Yes?”

“There is something you should know.”

Before she could answer, the door opened.

Ji-ho entered.

The room immediately became quieter.

Min-jun looked at his son.

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years of pain.

Fifteen years of anger.

Then Min-jun whispered:

“Ji-ho.”

The powerful man who controlled an empire...

The man criminals feared...

Suddenly looked like a little boy.

He walked forward.

Slowly.

And hugged his father.

Chloe looked away.

It felt too private.

But she saw something.

Ji-ho’s hands were shaking.

Just slightly.

Almost invisible.

But they were.

The feared mafia boss was not afraid of enemies.

He was afraid of losing his father again.

That evening, Chloe prepared to leave.

Daniel escorted her downstairs.

“Miss Bennett.”

“Yes?”

“Mr. Kang wants to offer you protection.”

Chloe stopped.

“Protection?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Because people will eventually learn you helped Mr. Kang.”

“And?”

“And there are people who may not appreciate that.”

Chloe understood.

The danger.

The hidden world.

The reason Ji-ho had so many guards.

She looked back at the building.

“I don’t need protection.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“Everyone needs protection.”

“Maybe.”

She smiled slightly.

“But I don’t want my life to change because I helped someone.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t understand.”

“What?”

“Your life already changed.”

That night, Chloe returned to her small apartment.

The ceiling leaked.

The refrigerator made strange noises.

Her grandmother Mae slept in the bedroom.

Chloe quietly placed her bag down.

“You’re late.”

She froze.

“Grandma?”

Mae sat up.

“You look like you saw a ghost.”

Chloe smiled.

“Something strange happened today.”

“What kind of strange?”

Chloe hesitated.

Then she told her everything.

The old man.

The son.

The powerful family.

The expensive cars.

Mae listened quietly.

But when Chloe mentioned the name Kang Ji-ho...

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But Chloe noticed.

“Grandma?”

Mae looked away.

“Where did you hear that name?”

“Why?”

“Chloe.”

Her voice was different.

Serious.

Afraid.

“I need you to stay away from that family.”

The room became silent.

“Why?”

Mae looked at her granddaughter.

Because she knew something Chloe did not.

Something buried for twenty-five years.

Something connected to the Kang family.

Something connected to Chloe’s parents.

“Because,” Mae whispered,

“the Kang family does not find people by accident.”

Chloe felt a chill.

“What does that mean?”

Mae looked toward the window.

Rain began falling again.

“The night your mother died…”

Chloe stopped breathing.

She rarely spoke about her mother.

Not because she did not care.

Because the memories hurt too much.

“What about my mother?”

Mae closed her eyes.

“She was not killed in an accident.”

The words shattered the room.

“What?”

“Your mother knew the Kang family.”

Chloe stood frozen.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

Mae shook her head slowly.

“I spent twenty-five years hiding this from you.”

“Why?”

“Because I promised your mother.”

Chloe’s voice trembled.

“Promised her what?”

Mae looked at her.

“To protect you from the truth.”

Across the city, inside a dark office overlooking Chicago, Kang Ji-ho stared at a photograph.

A photograph his father had kept hidden for decades.

A photograph of a young woman.

A woman he recognized.

A woman he thought was dead.

Behind him, Daniel stood silently.

“Sir.”

Ji-ho did not answer.

“Are you certain?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Ji-ho’s fingers tightened around the photograph.

The woman in the picture was Chloe’s mother.

And behind her...

Standing beside her...

Was Min-jun Kang.

His father.

Twenty-five years ago.

Before the betrayal.

Before the disappearance.

Before the empire.

Ji-ho finally understood.

Chloe Bennett was not just a waitress who saved his father.

She was connected to the secret that destroyed his family.

A secret someone had killed to bury.

He looked at the photograph again.

Then he whispered:

“Find out everything about Chloe Bennett.”

Daniel nodded.

“And if the people who hid this truth are still alive?”

Ji-ho’s eyes darkened.

“Then they will learn something.”

May you like

“What?”

“The Kang family does not forget.”
