Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Confrontation

The emergency board meeting was called for 2:00 PM in the grand conference room on the eighty-fifth floor.
Marcus Sterling, a wealthy shareholder who held twelve percent of the company’s stock and had spent five years trying to oust Grant, sat at the head of the long marble conference table. Surrounding him were ten senior directors, all staring at their tablets with grim, judgmental expressions.
The heavy mahogany doors opened.
Grant stepped into the boardroom. But he wasn't alone.
Walking beside him, wearing a dark navy business suit that Grant had his personal tailor deliver to her office an hour earlier, was Elena. Behind them stood Mila, holding a colorful sketchbook and a set of markers, completely unfazed by the high-stakes corporate environment.
Marcus Sterling slammed his pen down onto the marble table. “Grant! What is the meaning of this circus?! You bring a night cleaner and her child into a confidential board meeting after throwing our public relations team into chaos?!”
Grant walked to the center of the room, taking his seat at the head of the table while motioning for Elena and Mila to sit in the executive guest chairs beside him.
“Marcus,” Grant said calmly, resting his elbows on the table. “You called this meeting claiming I suffered a lapse in judgment that threatens company shareholder value. Is that correct?”
“It certainly is!” Sterling shouted, gesturing wildly. “The press is having a field day! The head of Whitaker Global lying to a room full of elementary school parents, claiming a minimum-wage employee is his wife or girlfriend?! It makes us look like a soap opera! It undermines our corporate dignity!”
Grant let out a quiet, cold chuckle.
“Corporate dignity?” Grant asked, his gray eyes narrowing into sharp steel. “Is corporate dignity what you were protecting when you authorized secret payments to the maintenance union supervisors at our northern plant, Marcus?”
Sterling froze. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a ghost. “What... what are you talking about?”
Grant tapped a button on his console. The large wall screens flickered to life, displaying bank wire transfers, encrypted email logs, and security footage from the northern industrial plant showing Marcus Sterling’s private assistant meeting with the union supervisor who had tampered with the conveyor belts.
The board members gasped, leaning forward to inspect the screen in sheer disbelief.
“Marcus,” Grant explained cleanly to the board, “engineered the factory failures to drop our stock price five percent this week, intending to buy up secondary shares at a discount through his offshore shell company in Panama. He was going to use this media leak as his final push to force a board vote today.”
Sterling stood up, his chair scraping violently against the floor. “This... this is a fabrication! It’s illegal surveillance!”
“It’s a federal indictment, Marcus,” Grant corrected softly. “Federal agents are waiting in the lobby downstairs.”
Two security guards stepped into the boardroom, taking Sterling by the arms and leading him out as he shouted curses at Grant.
The room fell dead silent.
Grant stood up and looked around the table at the remaining directors.
“Now, regarding Elena Collins,” Grant said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “She is an employee who has worked twelve hours a day to support her daughter while keeping this building operating flawlessly. She represents the true work ethic that built this company—not the greedy backstabbing of men like Marcus Sterling.”
Grant walked over to Elena, placing his hand gently on the back of her chair.
“As of today,” Grant announced, “Elena Collins is appointed as the Director of Operations for our new Community Development and Employee Welfare Foundation, with a full corporate salary and executive equity.”

The board members looked at each other, then slowly, one by one, began to clap.
Elena looked up at Grant, tears of gratitude shining in her eyes like diamonds.
