Chapter 3 - The Deception Begins

The silence at Table Four was deafening.
Elena stared at Grant, her hands trembling, horror and confusion clashing in her dark eyes. She looked at her daughter, then back at her billionaire employer, her mind racing to comprehend how the most powerful executive in the city was standing in front of her school paper tablecloth.
“Mila... baby, what did you say?” Elena whispered, her voice trembling violently. “Mr. Whitaker is... he’s my boss. He’s not—"
Grant stepped forward smoothly, placing a gentle, reassuring hand on Elena’s shoulder before she could finish her sentence. The touch was warm, firm, and surprisingly protective.
“I’m sorry I’m late, Elena,” Grant said, his baritone voice perfectly calm, carrying across the table with a natural, effortless intimacy that left no room for doubt. “The traffic near the industrial park was terrible. But I promised Mila I wouldn't miss her presentation.”
Elena gasped, her lips parting as she stared at him in utter disbelief.
Mila pulled a wooden folding chair out and beamed up at Grant. “Sit down! You almost missed the cake!”
Grant sat down on the low plastic chair, his long legs folded uncomfortably under the children’s cafeteria table, but his face held nothing but pleasant warmth. He reached across the paper tablecloth, gently taking Elena’s cold, trembling hand in his own.
“Are you alright?” Grant asked her softly, his eyes locking onto hers with a message that spoke far beyond words: Trust me. Play along.
Elena swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. She felt the warmth of his hand wrapping around hers—a hand that had probably signed multi-million dollar contracts that morning—and for the first time in five years, the suffocating burden of being completely alone seemed to lift just an inch.
“I... I’m fine,” Elena managed to whisper, her cheeks flushing a soft, delicate pink. “I just... didn't expect you to make it.”
Across the table, a loud, sneering voice interrupted them.
“Well, well. I didn't think Elena Collins had anyone in her life.”
Sitting at Table Three was a heavily made-up woman wearing an expensive designer dress that looked vastly overdone for a school event, accompanied by a man in an ill-fitting suit. It was Mrs. Vance, the mother of the boy who had teased Mila the year before.
Mrs. Vance looked Grant up and down, eyeing his suit, his silver Patek Philippe watch, and his immaculate posture with sharp, jealous eyes.
“And who are you supposed to be?” Mrs. Vance asked patronizingly. “Elena’s new boyfriend? I thought she worked night shifts cleaning toilets.”
Mila stood up on her chair, her chins tilted up proudly. “He’s my dad! And he works in the top room of the biggest building in the city!”
Mrs. Vance scoffed. “Right. A likely story—"
Grant slowly turned his head to look at Mrs. Vance. The gentle warmth vanished from his expression, replaced in a fraction of a second by the icy, formidable authority that made Wall Street hedge fund managers sweat.
“My name is Grant Whitaker,” Grant said, his voice dropping an octave into a quiet, deadly calm. “And if you speak to my family or comment on Elena’s hard work again, I will personally look into why your husband’s logistics firm is currently six months delinquent on their commercial lease in my downtown properties.”
Mrs. Vance’s husband went pale as chalk. He grabbed his wife’s arm, whispering frantically in her ear, pulling her back into her chair as she stared at Grant in absolute terror.

Grant turned back to Elena, his face softening instantly back into a warm smile.
Elena stared at him, her hand still resting in his, completely speechless.
