Chapter 2 - Table Four

The school cafeteria was a chaotic, beautiful explosion of laughter, chatter, the smell of warm sheet cake, and cheap coffee. Banners painted with tempera craft paint hung from the ceiling. Dozens of families squeezed into long foldable tables, snapping photos with smartphones and hugging children who proudly displayed macaroni necklaces.

Mila navigated the crowd with practiced speed, holding tightly onto Grant’s hand.

Grant followed, his tall, imposing figure drawing curious glances from several parents. His bespoke suit, silver watch, and commanding presence were starkly out of place among the working-class families of the neighborhood, but he paid no attention to the stares. His eyes were fixed on the back of the room.

At Table Four sat a young woman.

She wore a simple cream-colored linen blouse and dark trousers, both immaculately clean and pressed despite showing obvious signs of wear. Her dark hair was gathered into a soft bun at the nape of her neck. She was holding a cup of punch, staring quietly at the paper tablecloth where Mila had drawn a small heart before going outside.

She looked tired—the kind of soul-deep exhaustion that comes from years of carrying the entire weight of the world on two young shoulders—but as Mila had said, she was undeniably beautiful. Her features were delicate yet defined by a striking, quiet strength.

Grant’s heart did a strange, unfamiliar flip in his chest.

He knew that face.

Every morning at 5:30 AM, when Grant arrived at the top floor of Whitaker Tower in downtown Manhattan to start his eighteen-hour workday, his office was already immaculate. The white marble floors sparkled, his oak desk was dusted, and a fresh bottle of spring water was always placed beside his tablet. Once, six months ago, he had stepped out of his private elevator early and seen a slender woman quietly gathering cleaning supplies into a cart near the executive suite. They had exchanged a brief, polite nod before she vanished down the service stairs.

It was her.

“Mom!” Mila called out, breaking into a run for the last ten feet.

Elena Collins turned, a radiant, beautiful smile instantly transforming her tired face the moment her eyes met her daughter's. “Mila! Sweetheart, I thought you went to get more napkins—"

Elena’s voice trailed off. Her breath hitched in her throat.

Grant stepped up to Table Four.

Elena’s eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing shock. Her face drained of all color as she recognized the man standing in her daughter’s public school cafeteria.

Grant Whitaker. The billionaire founder and CEO of Whitaker Global Holdings. The man whose name was etched in gold glass in the lobby of the building she scrubbed every night.

“Mr... Mr. Whitaker?” Elena stammered, standing up so fast her knee bumped the underside of the lunch table, making her punch cup rattle. “What... what are you doing here?”

May you like

Mila grabbed her mother’s hand, looking up at her with glowing pride.

“Mom, look!” Mila announced loudly enough for the neighboring tables to hear. “I found him! Dad came to the party!”
