Chapter 10 - The True Team

One year after the Mother’s Day party.

The sunny afternoon sky over St. Jude’s Elementary School was clear, warm, and brilliant blue.

The school courtyard was filled with music, laughter, and families celebrating the annual Spring Festival. Banners decorated the iron fences, and children ran through the grass wearing colorful paper crowns.

At Table Four in the courtyard sat Grant Whitaker.

He wasn't wearing a thousand-dollar suit or a silver watch. He wore a casual linen shirt, jeans, and sneakers, sitting comfortably on a low folding chair with his arm wrapped warmly around Elena’s waist. Elena looked radiant, a soft golden wedding band glittering on her ring finger, her head resting happily on Grant’s broad shoulder.

Standing in front of the table was Mila, wearing a bright yellow sun hat, proudly holding a framed painting that had just won First Place in the school art competition.

The painting showed three figures holding hands under a massive, brightly colored sunflower—a tall man, a woman, and a small girl.

At the bottom of the canvas, written in neat cursive handwriting, was the title: "OUR COMPLETE TEAM."

Mrs. Vance, walking past with her husband, looked at the happy family with a quiet, humbled smile, nodding respectfully to Grant and Elena as she passed.

Mila ran over to the table, hopping into Grant’s lap and showing him her blue gold medal.

“Look, Dad!” Mila shouted proudly, wrapping her arms around Grant’s neck. “I won First Place!”

Grant pulled his daughter close, kissing her cheek while holding Elena’s hand tightly in his own.

“You’re always First Place, sweetheart,” Grant whispered gently.

As the afternoon sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the courtyard, Grant looked at his wife and daughter—the family that had saved his heart from an empty fortune.

The lie told outside an iron gate had become the greatest truth of his life.

They were no longer missing half a team. They were complete, unbroken, and home forever.
