Chapter 7 - The Healing Process

Three months later, the chaos of the legal battles had settled into a quiet, structured routine of healing. Vance Enterprise—or rather, what was left of Gregory's personal estate—had been liquidated to pay for the legal settlements and corporate restitution. Sarah and Maya had officially dropped the name Vance, reclaiming their maternal name: Miller.

The pediatric wing of the hospital was quiet on a Saturday afternoon as I walked Maya to her final physical therapy session. Her cast had been removed a week prior, revealing a thin, neat surgical scar where Julian had stabilized the bone with a titanium plate.

"Does it hurt?" I asked as she flexed her fingers.

"A little stiff," Maya said, offering me a genuine, bright smile that reached her eyes. "But the therapist says I’ll be back to playing the violin by the fall semester. She said the surgical work was perfect."

"Julian is an excellent surgeon," I said, feeling a deep swell of professional and personal pride.

As we walked out of the clinic, Sarah met us in the lobby. She looked completely transformed. The tired, anxious lines around her eyes were gone, replaced by a radiant energy. She had taken a position as a coordinator for a local women's shelter, using her own experience to help others navigate the dark waters of domestic recovery.

"The final divorce decree came through this morning, Mom," Sarah said, handing me a copy of the legal documents. "Full custody to me. No visitation rights. Gregory accepted a plea deal of eight years in a state facility to avoid the federal grand jury charges for financial fraud."

I looked at the documents, then at my daughter and granddaughter. The victory wasn't just in the legal victory; it was in the resilience that had blossomed within them.

"Let's go home," I said, wrapping my arms around both of them. "We have a lot of lost time to make up for."
