Chapter 4 - The Legal Siege Begins

The sun rose over the city, casting long, sharp shadows across the mahogany conference table of Miller & Associates, the law firm founded by my late husband. Sitting across from me was Arthur Pendelton, a senior partner and an old friend who had spent his career dismantling corporate predators.
"The medical reports are ironclad, Helen," Arthur said, adjusting his glasses as he reviewed the files Julian had sent over. "The spiral fracture combined with the forensic photographs of the shoulder bruising constitute undeniable evidence of second-degree child abuse. The police have already initiated a formal domestic violence investigation."
"That’s the criminal side," I said, leaning forward. "What about the corporate leverage? Gregory will try to use his firm’s influence to suppress the district attorney's office. He’s done it for clients before."
Arthur smiled, a dry, predatory expression. "That’s where your flash drive comes in. Your forensic accountants found exactly what we needed. Gregory has been skimming from his firm's escrow accounts to fund a gambling habit in Nassau. His partners have no idea. If this information goes public, the firm faces disbarment, federal audits, and total ruin."
"I don't want it to go public yet," I stated firmly. "I want it placed directly on the managing partner's desk. Give them an ultimatum: they force Gregory out, strip him of his partnership shares, and cooperate fully with the police investigation, or the entire firm goes down with him."
The door to the conference room opened, and Sarah walked in, accompanied by Maya, whose arm was now encased in a permanent fiberglass cast. Maya looked tired, but the terror in her eyes had been replaced by a quiet, resilient determination.
"Grandma," Maya said, sitting next to me. "Mom told me about the files. Are we really going to stop him?"
"We are, sweetheart," I said, taking her hand. "He will never step foot in your house again. He will never speak to you again. We are going to take away every single piece of power he thinks he has."

Sarah sat on the other side of Maya, her posture straightening for the first time in years. "I signed the divorce papers this morning, Arthur. And I filed for an emergency order of protection. I’m ready to testify."
Arthur nodded, his expression softening with deep respect. "Then the siege begins. By noon today, Gregory Vance will realize he is completely alone."
