Chapter 6 - The Cornered Predator

Deprived of his career, his firm, and his social standing within less than twenty-four hours, Gregory did exactly what cornered predators always do: he became desperate and reckless.
Ignoring the temporary restraining order, he showed up at my suburban home at 8:00 p.m. The rain was pouring down, blurring the streetlights into smeared streaks of yellow and red. I was in the kitchen preparing tea for Maya when the heavy wooden front door shuddered under the impact of a violent fist.
"Helen! Open the door!" Gregory’s voice roared from the porch, raw and unhinged, stripped of all its former legal sophistication. "Sarah! Maya! Get out here right now! You think you can destroy my life and just walk away?!"
Maya flinched from the living room sofa, her good hand instantly flying to her cast. Sarah stood up, her face turning pale, but instead of backing away like she used to, she stepped toward the hallway.
"Stay back, Sarah," I commanded softly, walking past her. "Maya, go into my study and lock the door."
I walked to the front door, but I didn't open it. I turned on the porch lights, revealing Gregory through the reinforced glass panels. His expensive suit was soaked, his hair plastered to his forehead, his eyes wild and bloodshot. He looked completely unraveled.
"Open this door, you old witch!" he screamed, slamming his palm against the glass. "I’ll sue you for everything you have! I’ll make sure your daughter goes to jail for filing false police reports!"
I clicked the intercom button on the wall. "Gregory, the police were notified the moment your vehicle entered my street's neighborhood watch camera perimeter. They are exactly two minutes away. You are currently violating a judicial protection order on camera."
"I don't care about the order!" he yelled, kicking the base of the door. "You ruined me! Thomas fired me! The banks froze my cards! It’s all because of you!"
"No, Gregory," I said through the speaker, my voice calm, precise, and utterly devoid of fear. "You ruined yourself the moment you laid a hand on my granddaughter. You thought wealth made you invincible. You forgot that wealth is just paper, but family is iron. Go to jail quietly, Gregory. It’s the only dignity you have left."

The distant wail of police sirens began to echo through the rainy night air. Gregory froze, looking down the street as the blue and red lights illuminated the wet asphalt. Realizing he was trapped, he turned and tried to run toward his car, but two police cruisers blocked his driveway, their tires screeching to a halt.
Within seconds, he was tackled into the wet grass, pinned down, and handcuffed in the very dirt he had tried to look down upon. Through the window, Maya and Sarah watched him get pushed into the back of the cruiser. The terror that had governed their lives for years was finally driven away by the flashing lights of justice.
