Chapter 2 - The Confrontation in the Corridor

"Helen," Gregory said, pocketing his phone as I approached the waiting area. He used the smooth, modulated tone he typically reserved for jury selections. "I didn't think Sarah called you. There’s really no need for you to be here at this hour. It was a tragic accident, truly. Maya tripped in the dark. We have the best specialists looking at her, and we'll take her home as soon as the cast is set."

I stopped exactly three feet away from him. I didn't look at him; I looked past him, straight at my daughter.

"Sarah," I said, my voice cutting through the artificial warmth Gregory was projecting. "Look at me."

Sarah’s shoulders trembled. She slowly lifted her head, her eyes wide and filled with a desperate, pleading terror. "Mom... please. Don't make a scene. It was just an accident. We were all tired..."

"A spiral fracture of the humerus is not an accident caused by a fall on a flat surface, Sarah," I said, each word precise, delivered with the clinical finality of a diagnosis. "It is an injury caused by violent, physical force. And you sat there and repeated a lie to a mandatory reporter."

Gregory’s smile vanished, replaced by a dark, ugly sneer. He stepped directly into my line of sight, trying to use his height to intimidate me. "Listen to me, old woman. You are retired. You have no medical authority in this building anymore. I am Maya’s legal guardian, and my wife has given the official statement. If you utter one more word implying anything else, I will ruin your reputation, and I will ensure you never see that girl again."

I didn't flinch. I actually took a step closer, forcing him to look down into eyes that had seen far worse monsters than him.

"You think your legal firm protects you here, Gregory?" I whispered, my voice carrying a lethal quietness that made the nearby triage nurse stop typing. "I built the pediatric trauma wing of this hospital. The chief of surgery was my resident. The board of directors consists of people I have known for thirty years. You are a small, pathetic man who hits children in the dark. And tonight, you made the fatal mistake of doing it to mine."

Before he could speak, two large hospital security guards stepped out of the elevator, flanked by a local police officer whom Julian had called.

"Mr. Vance," the officer said, his hand resting casually on his utility belt. "We need you to step away from the medical area. A report has been filed, and we need to take official statements separately."

Gregory’s face flushed a deep, furious crimson. He looked at Sarah, expecting her to jump to his defense, but Sarah had covered her face with her hands, sobbing silently.

"This is a joke," Gregory hissed, pointing a finger at me. "You’ll regret this, Helen. By morning, my partners will have this handled."

"By morning, Gregory," I said, turning my back on him, "you will need a very good lawyer of your own."
