Chapter 7 - Warehouse 14

The docks were dark, cold, and smelled of salt water, diesel fuel, and rusted steel. Rain poured from the sky in heavy sheets, rattling against the corrugated iron roof of Warehouse 14.

The heavy sliding doors of the warehouse were cracked open three feet. A single yellow floodlight shone from the high ceiling inside, casting long, eerie shadows across rows of stacked shipping crates.

I walked through the gap in the door, holding the heavy steel box in both hands.

Behind me, completely hidden in the pitch-black shadows of the rain outside, Lucas and his SWAT team moved like ghosts, taking up sniper positions along the perimeter catwalks.

At the center of the warehouse, standing under the bright yellow floodlight, was Julian Blackwood.

He was wearing a rain-soaked coat, his hair wild, holding a heavy black pistol in his right hand. Beside him, bound to a wooden chair with thick rope, was Chloe. Her face was bruised, her hair matted with sweat, tears streaming down her face behind the duct tape over her mouth.

When Chloe saw me walk into the light, her eyes widened in terror, her body shaking as she tried to scream against the tape.

"Elena!" Julian called out, his voice echoing off the iron walls, high-pitched and hysterical. "You actually came! Did you bring the drive?!"

"I brought the box, Julian," I said, stopping twenty feet away, holding the steel box up so he could see it. "Let Chloe go. She has nothing to do with this. She didn't even know about the offshore accounts."

Julian laughed—a dry, manic sound. "She didn't know because she's an idiot! She was only useful because her surname was going to link your father's estate to our corporate board! But you... you ruined everything, Elena! My mother is in a federal holding cell! My brother is facing twenty years! My family name is disgraced!"

"Your mother tried to murder me, Julian," I said, my voice cold and steady as I took a slow step forward. "Your family built its wealth on stolen medical research. It was over the second my father wrote down the truth."

"Shut up!" Julian screamed, raising the pistol and aiming it directly at my forehead. "Put the box on the ground and kick it over to me! Now! Or I blow her head off!"

Chloe whimpered loudly, closing her eyes in terror.

I lowered the box slowly toward the concrete floor. "Okay, Julian. I'm putting it down. Just calm down."

"You think you're so smart, don't you?" Julian sneered, taking a step toward the box. "You think some low-level fed is going to save you—"

RED DOT.

A tiny, bright red laser beam appeared directly on the center of Julian’s chest.

Then another. And another.

"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPON!" Lucas’s voice boomed from the high steel catwalks above, echoing through the warehouse like the wrath of God.

Julian froze, his eyes widening in sudden, paralyzing realization.

"Drop the gun, Julian!" Lucas shouted from the darkness above. "The building is surrounded! You have five seconds before my snipers take the shot!"

Julian looked at the red dots on his chest, then at me, his face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. "If I'm going down... I'm taking her with me!"

He swung the pistol away from Chloe and pointed it straight at my chest.

THWACK!

A suppressed sniper rifle shot cracked through the air.

Julian’s shoulder exploded in a spray of red. He let out a blood-curdling scream, dropping the pistol onto the concrete floor as he collapsed onto his knees, clutching his arm.

In a split second, SWAT officers descended from the catwalks on ropes, slamming Julian face-first onto the concrete, pinning his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

Lucas dropped down from the entry ladder, sprinting across the floor directly toward me. He grabbed my shoulders, pulling me into his chest, holding me so tight I could hear his racing heart pounding against his Kevlar vest.

"Are you okay?" Lucas gasped, his voice trembling with adrenaline as he pulled back to inspect my face. "Did he hit you?"

"I'm okay, Lucas," I whispered, leaning my head against his chest, feeling the warm, solid reality of his presence. "I'm okay."

Behind us, two officers cut the ropes binding Chloe to the chair.

Chloe pulled the duct tape off her mouth, weeping hysterically, and collapsed onto her knees on the cold floor. She looked up at me through her tears—not with anger, not with arrogance, but with absolute, overwhelming shame.

"Elena..." Chloe sobbed, reaching out a trembling hand toward me. "I'm... I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry..."

I walked over to my sister, knelt down beside her on the cold concrete, and pulled her into a quiet embrace as the red and blue lights of the arriving police cruisers painted the warehouse walls in pulsing, victorious color.
