Chapter 10 - A Future in Bloom

Later that evening, after the guests had departed and the sun began to set over the river, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of gold, violet, and crimson, I walked out onto the stone terrace behind the research institute.
The evening breeze was cool and sweet, carrying the scent of blooming jasmine from the gardens below.
Footsteps echoed softly on the stone floor behind me.
I turned around. Lucas was walking toward me, dressed in a sleek black suit, holding two glasses of sparkling apple cider.
He handed one glass to me, his dark eyes sparkling under the fading sunlight.
"A toast," Lucas smiled, raising his glass. "To Executive Chairwoman Elena Vance-Miller."
I laughed softly, clinking my glass against his. "To Agent Lucas Vance, who makes a terrible waiter but a very good federal hero."
Lucas set his glass down on the stone railing, stepped closer, and gently wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me close against his chest. I rested my hands on his broad shoulders, looking up into his warm, handsome face.
"You know," Lucas murmured softly, his thumb gently tracing my jawline, "my task force assignment on the Blackwood case officially ended yesterday."
"Oh?" I teased, smiling up at him. "Does that mean you're going back to Washington?"
"Not a chance," Lucas whispered, his eyes filled with a deep, unwavering devotion. "I submitted my transfer request to the local field office this morning. I'm staying right here, Elena. With you."
My heart swelled with a warmth so profound it wiped away every painful memory of the past.
Lucas reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, and opened it.
Inside sat a stunning, simple platinum ring holding a brilliant cushion-cut diamond that caught the golden light of the setting sun.
"Elena Miller," Lucas said softly, his voice rich with emotion. "You are the bravest, most extraordinary woman I have ever met. Will you do me the honor of building a life with me?"
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy filled my eyes. I didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes," I whispered, holding out my hand. "Yes, Lucas. A thousand times yes."

Lucas slipped the ring onto my finger, pulled me into his arms, and pressed his lips against mine in a deep, sweet, passionate kiss that sealed our unbroken future.
Beneath the clear, star-filled sky, surrounded by the peaceful beauty of my father's restored legacy, I took a deep, effortless breath of night air, knowing that I was finally safe, deeply loved, and entirely free.
