Chapter 5 - The Hidden Ledger

By six o'clock that evening, my apartment was restored. Lucas had helped me move every box back upstairs, re-assembled my bed frame, and even brought a hot meal of grilled chicken, brown rice, and fresh vegetables from a local diner to ensure my blood sugar remained perfectly balanced.
We sat at my small kitchen table. My new insulin pump clicked softly against my waist, delivering a precise bolus for the meal.
Lucas placed a dusty, lockable steel box on the table between us.
"Where did you get this?" I asked, recognizing the heavy steel box instantly. It had sat on my father’s desk in his home study for as long as I could remember.
"We seized it from Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood’s private safe at Bellefleur Manor during the search warrant execution yesterday," Lucas explained. "Evelyn kept it hidden behind a false panel in her wine cellar. She thought nobody would ever find it."
He pulled a set of small master keys from his pocket and inserted one into the lock.
CLICK.
The heavy lid popped open.
Inside the box lay three leather-bound journals, a stack of original corporate stock certificates, and a silver USB flash drive wrapped in a velvet cloth.
I reached out, my fingers trembling slightly as I picked up the topmost journal. I opened the cover. My father’s neat, precise cursive handwriting filled the yellowed pages:
May 14th, 2023
If my daughter Elena is reading this, then I am no longer here to protect her. Evelyn Blackwood has discovered that I audited the accounts of the Blackwood Charitable Foundation. She thinks I am blind to her greed. She thinks because I am old, I will stay quiet.
Elena, my sweet girl... the Blackwoods do not own their empire. They built it on stolen research. Thirty years ago, your grandfather and I patented the synthetic peptide formula that modern insulin delivery systems rely on. Evelyn’s late husband stole the patent through a fraudulent shell company.
They owe our family over eighty million dollars in unpaid royalties. I have hidden the master patent deeds and the original offshore bank routing numbers on the encrypted USB drive in this box. Use it to take back what belongs to you.
Tears welled in my eyes, dropping softly onto the ink of my father’s handwriting.
"He knew," I whispered, wiping my cheek. "My father knew they were stealing from us all along."
"Your father was a brilliant man, Elena," Lucas said softly, reaching across the table and placing his hand over mine. His touch was warm, solid, and comforting. "He wasn't just trying to expose her fraud. He was gathering enough evidence to make sure you would be financially independent and protected for the rest of your life."
"Why didn't he go to the police before he died?"
"Because Evelyn was powerful," Lucas explained. "She had political connections, high-society judges, and private security teams. Your father knew he needed absolute, undeniable proof. And he died before he could deliver it to the grand jury."
Lucas leaned forward, his dark eyes locking onto mine with fierce intensity.
"But he passed the baton to you, Elena. And with this USB drive, we have enough evidence to dismantle the entire Blackwood estate, liquidate their assets, and restore your father's name to the medical research foundation."
Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the table. It was a text message from an unknown number.
I picked it up and tapped the screen.
Unread Message:
"If you hand that USB drive over to the FBI, your sister Chloe won't make it to her next birthday. Check your email."
My breath hitched in my throat. I opened my email app.
Attached was a live photo of Chloe sitting in the backseat of a black sedan, tied to the door handles, a piece of duct tape slapped across her mouth, surrounded by two armed men in heavy black jackets.
May you like
I dropped the phone onto the table, my face draining of all color.
"Lucas..." I choked out, pointing at the screen. "Look."
