Chapter 2 - The Hospital Room Protocol

The smell of rubbing alcohol and the soft, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor brought me back to consciousness.

I opened my eyes slowly. The harsh glare of fluorescent lights blinded me for a second before my vision adjusted. I was in a private hospital room on the upper floors of Saint Jude’s Trauma Center. An IV line was taped to the back of my left hand, and a brand-new insulin pump infusion set was neatly taped to my right abdomen, humming softly as it delivered a steady basal rate.

Sitting in a hard wooden chair beside my bed, reading through a stack of legal documents, was Agent Lucas Vance. He had traded his catering vest for a sharp, tailored charcoal suit.

When he heard the bedsheets rustle, he set the papers down instantly and stood up.

"Welcome back, Elena," he said, his voice warm and deep. He poured a glass of water from a pitcher on the nightstand and handed it to me, helping me lift my head so I could sip through a straw. "How are you feeling?"

"Like I was hit by a truck," I croaked, my throat dry and sore from the bitter wine. "What... what happened?"

"You've been unconscious for sixteen hours," Lucas explained, taking his seat beside the bed. "The doctors managed to flush the sedatives out of your system and stabilize your blood sugar. You're going to be fine."

I looked at him, my mind piecing together the chaotic memories of the wedding ballroom. "You're an FBI agent. Why were you at my sister's wedding dressed as a caterer?"

Lucas leaned back in his chair, his expression turning serious. "I wasn't there for the wedding, Elena. I was there for Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood."

"What did she do?"

"Evelyn isn't just a high-society matriarch," Lucas said, pulling a tablet from his briefcase and tapping the screen. "For the past eight years, she has been operating a massive healthcare fraud scheme through the Blackwood Charitable Foundation. She’s been diverting millions of dollars meant for pediatric medical research into private offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands."

My eyes widened in shock. "My father... before he died three years ago, he donated two million dollars to that exact foundation."

"I know," Lucas said softly, looking at me with deep sympathy. "Your father, David Vance—no relation to me, pure coincidence—was beginning to ask questions about where his donation was going right before he died. Evelyn realized he was getting close to uncovering the fraud."

A cold spike of fear shot through my chest. "Wait... are you saying my father's death wasn't a heart attack?"

"We're re-opening his case," Lucas confirmed grimly. "When Evelyn realized you were marrying Grant, she saw an opportunity to keep you close—to monitor you and make sure you never dug into your father's old financial records. But when she saw your medical equipment at the wedding, when she saw how independent you were becoming, she panicked."

Suddenly, the door to my hospital room burst open.

Grant Blackwood marched into the room, followed by his older brother Julian and two men in expensive legal suits. Grant looked disheveled, his tie loosened, his face flushed with anger.

"Elena!" Grant shouted, ignoring Lucas completely as he walked up to my bed. "Thank God you're awake! You need to sign these affidavits right now!"

I stared at my fiancé in disbelief. "What?"

Grant shoved a stack of legal papers onto my lap, holding out a gold pen. "Our family lawyers drafted a statement. It says that you suffered an accidental diabetic emergency at the wedding, that you accidentally dropped your own insulin pump into the trash bin while confused, and that my mother was simply trying to give you a glass of water."

I looked at the papers, then up at Grant’s desperate, selfish face. "She forced wine down my throat, Grant. She ripped my pump out of my skin. There were three hundred witnesses."

"Nobody is going to testify against my mother, Elena!" Grant snapped, leaning over my bed. "Do you have any idea what this is doing to our family's stock price? Julian and Chloe’s wedding reception was ruined! Chloe is crying hysterically at home! If you don't sign these papers, my mother could face criminal charges!"

"She is facing criminal charges, Mr. Blackwood," Agent Vance said, standing up from his chair. His tall frame towered over Grant, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy tone. "And if you take one more step toward my witness, I will arrest you right now for witness intimidation and obstruction of justice."

Grant spun around, glaring at Lucas. "Who the hell do you think you are? You're a low-level fed playing hero! My family owns half the judges in this city!"

"Then you better hope those judges are sitting in federal court," Lucas replied calmly. He reached into his jacket, pulled out an official federal arrest warrant, and held it up to Grant’s face. "Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood was taken into federal custody two hours ago. And based on the evidence we found in her jeweled clutch, you and your brother are officially named as co-conspirators."

Grant’s face turned from red to ghost-white. The pen slipped from his hand, clattering against the linoleum floor.
