Chapter 8 - THE FALL OF THE STERLING EMPIRE

Siren wails filled the air as a dozen federal law enforcement vehicles roared onto the golf course, encircling the helipad. Heavy armed FBI agents spilled out, surrounding the helicopter and forcing the pilot and bodyguards to the ground with their hands behind their heads.

Sarah Vance stepped out of a federal sedan, walking toward us with two marshals holding heavy steel handcuffs.

"Arthur Sterling," Sarah announced, her voice booming over the sound of the idling helicopter. "You are under arrest for federal RICO violations, conspiracy to commit murder, tax evasion, child abuse, and obstruction of justice."

The marshals pulled Arthur to his feet, pulling his arms behind his back and slapping the heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists. The proud billionaire, who had spent decades destroying lives from his air-conditioned office, was forced into the back of a police cruiser in front of dozens of local news cameras that had arrived on the scene.

Standing near the perimeter fence was Christine.

She had driven to the country club following her father’s trail. She stood beside her car, watching her father get hauled away in handcuffs. Her face was pale, her clothes disheveled, and her eyes filled with utter ruin.

She looked at me as I walked past her toward Sarah's vehicle.

"Ethan..." she sobbed, stepping forward. "Ethan, what have you done? What's going to happen to us?"

I stopped and turned to look at her.

"Brian and Scott are facing twenty years in federal prison," I told her, my voice devoid of emotion. "Your father will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars. And you... you will answer to the court for your complicity."

"Ethan, please!" Christine cried, grabbing my hand. "I'm your wife! We can rebuild! I'll tell the court everything! Just don't leave me with nothing!"

I gently pulled my hand away from her grip.

May you like

"You had a choice, Christine," I said softly. "You chose your father's money over your own child. You don't get to be a mother anymore."

I walked away, leaving her weeping on the side of the road as federal agents approached her with a subpoena.
