Chapter 7 - FACING THE PATRIARCH

Outside, the morning sky was bright and blue.

As I carried Jake down the private service elevator into the basement loading dock, four black FBI SUVs pulled up with sirens blaring. Dozens of tactical agents in heavy body armor spilled out, weapons drawn, securing the area.

Sarah Vance stepped out of the lead vehicle, holding a stack of signed federal warrants.

"Ethan!" Sarah called out, running toward us. "Are you okay? Is Jake alright?"

"He's safe," I said, hand-delivering Jake to Sarah's team of federal marshals. "Keep him protected, Sarah. I have one last thing to finish."

"Ethan, stop!" Sarah warned. "The FBI is executing the arrest warrants at Arthur's estate right now!"

"He isn't at his estate," I replied, pulling my phone from my pocket.

On the screen was a real-time GPS tracker from the listening device I had planted in Arthur’s study. The signal was moving rapidly away from Brentwood toward a private helipad at the Nashville Country Club six miles away. Arthur knew the federal warrants were active. He was trying to flee the country on his private chopper.

"Vance," I spoke into my earpiece as I jumped into my silver Honda Accord. "Intercept the helipad."

"Already on it, Marcus," Vance replied. "I'm blocking the airfield exit."

Ten minutes later, the silver Accord slammed through the wooden security gates of the Nashville Country Club, tires screaming over the manicured grass of the golf course.

Ahead on the private helipad, a white Sikorsky helicopter was idling, its massive rotor blades spinning up with a deafening roar.

Arthur Sterling, wearing a heavy winter coat and carrying two leather duffel bags packed with cash and bearer bonds, was rushing toward the open helicopter door, flanked by two remaining bodyguards.

I slammed my car to a halt fifty yards away, blocking the helipad access road.

Arthur turned around, his silver hair blowing wildly in the helicopter's wind blast. When he saw me step out of the car, his face twisted into a grotesque mask of rage and disbelief.

"You!" Arthur screamed over the roar of the engines. "You arrogant little bastard! You destroyed my family! You ruined fifty years of my legacy!"

"You did that to yourself, Arthur!" I shouted back, walking slowly toward him across the wet grass. "When you laid hands on my son!"

Arthur pulled a small nickel-plated revolver from his coat pocket and pointed it directly at my chest. "I built this city! I own the judges! I own the police! A nobody like you doesn't get to take my life away!"

He pulled the trigger.

BANG!

I felt a sharp, burning tear across my left shoulder as the bullet grazed my jacket, but I didn't stop walking. I didn't even flinch.

Arthur’s eyes went wide with sheer horror as he saw me advance through the bullet smoke like an unstoppable force of nature. His hand shook violently as he tried to cock the revolver again.

I closed the distance in two strides.

I grabbed Arthur's wrist, twisted the revolver out of his hand, and threw it into the roaring rotor wash behind him. I grabbed him by his lapels, swept his legs out, and slammed the proud, arrogant patriarch of the Sterling family onto his knees in the wet grass.

Arthur gasped for air, looking up at me with eyes full of terror. For the first time in his life, he realized his money, his political influence, and his name couldn't protect him.

"Please..." Arthur begged, his voice cracking. "Ethan... please... I'm your father-in-law... I'm Jake's grandfather..."

"You are nothing to him," I said, my voice dropping to a icy whisper. "And you will never see his face again."
