Chapter 10 - A PROMISE KEPT

The sun was setting over the Chesapeake Bay, casting a golden glow across the gentle water.

Jake and I sat on the edge of the wooden dock, our legs dangling over the water, watching his wooden sailboat drift peacefully along the shoreline. A cool autumn breeze swept through the trees behind us, carrying the salty scent of the ocean.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out—a standard civilian phone now.

It was a text message from Sarah Vance: Arthur Sterling's final appeal was denied today. Life sentence confirmed without parole. You and Jake are safe forever.

I closed the phone and slipped it back into my pocket, letting out a long, quiet breath. The ghost of my past had finally been laid to rest.

Jake leaned his head against my arm, watching the seagulls fly low over the water.

"Dad?" he asked softly.

"Yeah, buddy?"

"When I was in that hospital room..." Jake whispered, his voice quiet as he looked out at the bay, "I was really scared. Grandpa told me you were just a soft guy who couldn't protect anyone. He said you were never coming."

I put my arm around his small shoulders, pulling him close against my side. "I know, Jake."

Jake looked up at me, his brown eyes clear, bright, and full of trust.

"I knew he was lying," Jake smiled, his hand tightening around mine. "Because you promised you'd always come for me."

I looked down at my boy—my brave, strong little boy—and kissed the top of his head as the last light of the sun dipped below the horizon.

"Always, buddy," I whispered, holding him tight against the quiet evening air. "Always."
