Chapter 5 - LEGAL WARFARE & HIDDEN TRAPS

By 7:00 AM the following morning, the sun rose over a misty D.C. skyline—not in Nashville, but inside a high-security federal building downtown.

Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Vance—Vance’s sister and one of the few untainted prosecutors in the Department of Justice—sat behind her desk, staring at her laptop screen in complete disbelief.

I sat opposite her, wearing a clean suit, holding a hot cup of black coffee.

"Where did you get this?" Sarah asked, her voice breathless as she scrolled through the cloned hard drive I had delivered three hours earlier. "These are wire transfer logs from Cayman shell accounts directly into the campaign funds of three state senators. There are offshore accounts detailing extortion payments, land-grab bribery, and illegal weapons smuggling."

"It belonged to Arthur Sterling," I said simply.

Sarah looked up at me, her eyes sharp. "Ethan... this is enough to trigger a massive federal RICO indictment. We can freeze every asset Sterling owns by noon. His bank accounts, his real estate, his private security licenses—everything."

"Do it," I said. "And do it fast. He’s planning to move on my son tonight."

"What about the local police?" Sarah asked, picking up her phone. "If Deputy Miller is compromised—"

"The FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team needs to handle the hospital perimeter," I interrupted. "Don't notify Metro Police. Sterling has eyes inside their dispatch room."

Sarah nodded, her fingers flying across her keyboard as she initiated the emergency federal warrant process. "I’ll issue a Federal Protection Order for Jake immediately. Legally, Christine and her father won't be allowed within five hundred feet of him, and sole temporary custody goes to you."

While Sarah worked the legal levers, my phone vibrated in my pocket.

It was an encrypted message from Vance: Target has initiated Vanguard Apex. Four operators in two civilian vans approaching Vanderbilt Medical Center. Estimated arrival: 20 minutes.

They were moving faster than expected. Arthur was desperate.

I stood up, adjusting my jacket. "Sarah, get those warrants signed. I have to go back to the hospital."

"Ethan, wait!" Sarah called out. "If you take the law into your own hands now, you could lose custody of Jake forever!"

I stopped at the door, looking back at her. "Lawyers fight with paper, Sarah. I fight with time. And right now, my son has twenty minutes."
