Chapter 7 - The Trial of Whispers

Six months passed. Sophia's pregnancy progressed beautifully in the quiet sanctuary of the estate, away from the prying eyes of the paparazzi. She spent her days designing the nursery in the sunlit guest cottage, her laughter finally returning to fill the high-ceilinged rooms of our home.

The federal trial took place in a heavily fortified federal courtroom downtown. Victor sat at the defense table, looking haggard, his expensive tailored suits hanging loosely off his diminished frame. Without his money, his influence, or his grooming staff, he looked exactly like what he was: a petty, violent criminal stripped of his illusions.

When Sophia took the stand as the prosecution's star witness, the courtroom fell into a dead silence. She wore a simple, elegant cream dress that clearly showed her advanced pregnancy. She didn't flinch when she looked across the room at her husband. Her voice was steady, clear, and resonant as she detailed the years of systematic isolation, the financial manipulation, and the brutal physical assault on the porch that midnight.

The defense attorney, desperate to salvage his case, attempted to cross-examine her aggressively, suggesting that her injuries were the result of an accidental fall caused by prenatal clumsiness and emotional instability.

Victoria Vance stood up, calmly entering the FBI wiretap audio into evidence. The courtroom listened in horror as Victor's own voice echoed through the speakers, screaming that he "owned the police" and promising to "make sure you both lose everything." The raw, unedited venom in his voice cemented his fate.

The jury didn't even require a lunch recess. They returned a unanimous guilty verdict on all twenty-four federal counts in less than forty-five minutes. When the judge handed down a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, Victor broke down, weeping into his hands as the marshals led him away in chains.
