Chapter 2 - The Rogue Blue Line

The two local police cruisers didn’t pull into the driveway; they tore through my open wrought-iron gates, tires screeching against the asphalt before fish-tailing onto the manicured lawn. Their emergency lights flashed violently, casting chaotic shadows across the stone facade of the estate. Two officers stepped out, their hats tilted back, their hands resting heavy and arrogant on the service weapons clipped to their belts. They were so blinded by their own assumed authority that they completely missed the three unmarked federal SUVs tucked deep into the blackness of the weeping willow trees.

"Ma'am!" Officer Davis—a man whose mortgage had been unofficially paid off by a shell company registered to Hale Logistics—called out as he strode up the walkway. "We have an official report of a domestic kidnapping and an emotionally disturbed person. Mr. Victor Hale reported that his wife was taken from their home under duress by an estranged relative. We have a legal obligation to enter the premises, clear the house, and take custody of Sophia Hale for her own protection."

I remained standing at the top of the porch stairs, my fingers lightly curved around my glass of scotch, taking a slow, deliberate sip. "You are trespassing on private property without a judicial warrant, Officer Davis. And last I checked, my daughter is an adult who fled to her mother’s home of her own free will, bearing a split lip and a swollen ankle courtesy of the man who signs your off-duty checks."

Davis sneered, exchanging a look with his partner before taking two aggressive steps up the stairs, his leather boots clicking loudly. "We aren't here to debate family drama with an old lady, Eleanor. Step aside and let us through, or we’ll arrest you on the spot for obstruction of a felony investigation."

"Obstruction of what investigation, Officer?" Agent Vance’s voice materialized from the darkness like a physical blow.

Vance stepped into the light of the porch lamp, flanked by four federal tactical agents clad in full combat gear, their assault rifles held at low-ready, the words FBI emblazoned in high-visibility yellow across their chests. Davis froze mid-stride, his jaw dropping slightly as the color drained from his face in a matter of seconds.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation," Vance announced, thrusting his gold shield directly into Davis’s face. "This property, its inhabitants, and all digital assets within a one-mile radius are currently under federal protection as part of an active Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) investigation. Officer Davis, Officer Miller—unbuckle your utility belts and place your weapons on the hood of your cruiser immediately. You are being detained for conspiracy to obstruct justice, tampering with a federal witness, and aiding a fugitive."

"Fugitive?" Davis stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating into a high-pitched whine. "Mr. Hale isn't a fugitive... he’s the CEO of—"

"He is a federal target as of midnight," Vance interrupted coldly, nodding to his agents. "And if you don't drop those belts in three seconds, you’ll be sharing a federal holding cell with him before the sun comes up."

The heavy clink of police gear hitting the asphalt marked the true beginning of the end for the Hale dynasty.
