Chapter 10 - The Sanctuary of Light

One year later.
The front gates of the Harrison estate were thrown wide open, decorated with massive arches of bright blue and white balloons that danced in the warm summer breeze. The melodic sound of children's laughter and live acoustic jazz music drifted through the manicured gardens. Today was Ethan’s first birthday celebration.
The stone porch—the exact place where Sophia had collapsed a year and a half ago, barefoot, bleeding, and terrified—had been completely transformed. It was now covered in plush picnic blankets, oversized building blocks, and vibrant baskets of fresh hydrangeas.
Sophia stood near the rose bushes, wearing a beautiful, flowing green floral dress. The sunlight caught the golden highlights in her hair, and her skin looked radiant, entirely healed of the shadows that had once dimmed her beauty. She was laughing as she watched Ethan chattering happily as he tried to chase a golden retriever puppy across the lawn.
I stood at the top of the porch stairs, leaning against the solid stone pillar, a glass of sweet iced tea in my hand. Marcus Vance, dressed in casual civilian clothes, stood beside me, an easy smile on his face as he watched Ethan’s clumsy, triumphant steps.
"You’ve built an incredible sanctuary here, Eleanor," Marcus said, his eyes scanning the peaceful, thriving gathering of friends, federal allies, and community leaders.

"It wasn't just built, Marcus," I replied, a soft, permanent smile finally touching my lips as I took a sip of my drink. "It was defended."
Sophia looked up from the grass, caught my eye through the crowd, and waved. Her smile was whole, bright, and completely free of fear. The legacy of abuse was dead. The empire of corruption had turned to dust. In their place stood a family that could never be broken, protected by a mother who knew exactly when to remain quiet—and exactly when to bring the storm.
