Chapter 7 - The Long Recovery

The private wing of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center was quiet, surrounded by manicured gardens and protected by elite military guards. Inside a sunlit room, Sarah lay in a comfortable bed, her fever finally broken. Her hair, though short and uneven, had been carefully styled by a kind nurse into a neat, modern pixie cut that emphasized her beautiful eyes.

The door opened softly, and Arthur walked in. He carried a small bouquet of freshly cut yellow roses—Sarah’s favorite. He had spent the morning working in the hospital’s small greenhouse, finding peace in the dirt once again.

"Dad," Sarah said, a genuine smile lighting up her face for the first time in months. She sat up, reaching her arms out.

Arthur hurried to her side, wrapping his arms around her tightly, but gently, careful not to disturb her IV lines. "I’m here, sweetheart. I’m right here."

"I heard what happened," Sarah whispered, burying her face in his shoulder. "The nurses... they were talking about the Sterling family. They said Charles, Eleanor, and Jason are all going to prison for life. They said their whole company was destroyed."

"They will never hurt you again, Sarah. Never," Arthur promised, stroking her short hair. "I swear it."

Sarah pulled back, looking into her father’s eyes. "Who are you really, Dad? The things they said... about Quantico, about the operations... Is it all true?"

Arthur sighed, sitting on the edge of the bed. He looked down at his scarred hands, then back at his daughter. "Before you were born, I was a man who did terrible things for what I thought were good reasons. I was a soldier, a trainer of killers, a ghost in the dark. But the day your mother handed you to me, I knew I didn't want that life anymore. I wanted to build things, to watch things grow. I wanted to be the man who took care of you."

"You are that man, Dad," Sarah said, tears rolling down her cheeks. "You saved me. You always save me."

"We’re going to rebuild, Sarah," Arthur said, a warm, genuine smile finally returning to his face. "We’ll find a new piece of land. A big one. With a massive garden. No more mansions, no more corporate monsters. Just us, and the dirt, and peace."

Over the next few weeks, Arthur never left her side. Under the care of the world's best military doctors, Sarah’s strength returned rapidly. Her spirit, which had been crushed by the oppressive atmosphere of the Sterling mansion, began to bloom again.

Meanwhile, across the country, the Sterling empire was being systematically dismantled. Every asset was liquidated, every corrupt politician they had paid off was exposed, and their name became a synonym for corporate evil and domestic cruelty. The legal system they thought they owned turned against them with terrifying force.
