Chapter 2 - The Network Awakens

The underground garage beneath a nondescript warehouse in downtown Washington D.C. smelled of oil, metal, and old secrets. Arthur stood before a heavy steel vault door. He placed his thumb on the biometric scanner. The machine beeped, a red light turning green. It hadn't been activated in fifteen years.

With a heavy hiss, the door swung open, revealing a room that belonged to a different era, yet remained terrifyingly modern. Racks of black-market firearms, tactical gear, forged passports, and encrypted servers lined the walls. This was Arthur's contingency—the life he hoped he would never have to give his daughter, funded by a lifetime of black operations the government couldn't acknowledge.

Arthur stripped off his wet flannel shirt. His torso was a map of violence—shrapnel scars across his ribs, a bullet wound near his shoulder, and a large, faded tattoo of a raven clutching a broken sword across his back. He pulled on a fitted, bulletproof tactical turtleneck, a lightweight combat vest, and strapped two customized .45 caliber pistols to his thighs.

A monitor on the wall flickered to life. A young woman with sharp eyes and multiple piercings appeared on the screen. Echo, one of the elite hackers Arthur had saved from a black-site prison in Europe a decade ago.

"Boss," Echo said, her voice filled with a mix of awe and dread. "When the beacon went off, I thought it was a glitch. You’re back?"

"They touched Sarah, Echo," Arthur said, his voice devoid of any warmth.

Echo’s face went pale. "Oh. Oh, no. They really don't know who they crossed, do they? What do you need?"

"Everything on the Sterling Group. I want their bank accounts, their shell companies, their international contacts, and most importantly, Charles Sterling’s current location."

"Give me ten minutes," Echo said, her fingers already flying across her keyboard like a machine gun. "But Boss, you need to know something. The Sterlings aren't working alone. They are backed by the 'Iron Vanguard'—a rogue mercenary group made up of ex-Spetsnaz and corrupt contractors. They handle the security for Charles’s shipping lanes. If you go after him, you’re going to war with a small army."

"Then it’s a fair fight," Arthur replied coldly.

Meanwhile, at the Sterling mansion, the situation had escalated. Eleanor had used her powerful political connections to force Vance’s team to withdraw temporarily due to a lack of a formal civilian warrant, playing a dangerous game of legal chess. She stood in her destroyed living room, screaming into her phone.

"Charles! You need to get back here right now!" she shrieked. "That old piece of trash assaulted Jason! He took Sarah! And some military freaks showed up threatening us!"

On the other end of the line, miles away at a secluded shipyard, Charles Sterling’s voice was like ice. "Calm down, Eleanor. The old man is a nobody. I’ve already dispatched a cleanup crew to his trailer. By tomorrow morning, he and anyone associated with him will disappear. As for Sarah, she knows too much about the upcoming shipment. We will find her, and we will handle it."

Charles hung up and turned to a massive, scarred man standing beside him—Captain Morozov, the leader of the Iron Vanguard.

"Take six of your best men," Charles ordered. "Go to the old man's property. Burn it to the ground. If he’s there, bring me his head. If he’s not, find out where he took his daughter."

Morozov grinned, a terrifying sight across his mangled face. "Consider it done, Mr. Sterling. An old man and a sick girl are not a challenge."

They had no idea that Arthur wasn't at his trailer. He was already moving toward them, a shadow in the night, driven by a father's wrath that no army could hope to contain.
