Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

Judge Harrison looked down at the legal documents, then looked back at Arthur Pendelton.

"Mr. Pendelton, your motion to stay the custody order is denied. The temporary custody of Daisy Vance is awarded to Mr. Grant Vance effective immediately. Furthermore, I am ordering a full investigation by Child Protective Services into the living conditions of Toby Vance to ensure he is not also being subjected to unstable parenting."

Eleanor let out a choked gasp, burying her face in her hands. The threat of losing Toby—their golden child—was the ultimate blow.

"Your Honor," I said, stepping forward. "I have a proposal that may save this court time and protect both children from further public trauma."

Judge Harrison raised an eyebrow. "Go ahead, Mr. Vance."

I turned around to face my son and his wife. I looked at them not with anger anymore, but with a profound, icy detachment. They were no longer my family. They were merely opposing parties in a dispute.

"Richard, Eleanor, here is the deal," I said, my voice steady and unyielding. "You will sign a voluntary, permanent termination of parental rights regarding Daisy. You will consent to my legal adoption of her. In exchange, I will not file the criminal complaints for child abandonment. I will allow you to keep custody of Toby without my legal interference, provided you complete court-mandated parenting classes and submit to the CPS investigation. If you sign the papers today, Daisy is legally mine, and this story never hits the newspapers or your firm’s executive board."

Arthur Pendelton immediately leaned over to Richard, whispering frantically. "Take it, Richard. If this goes to a criminal trial, you are going to jail, and you will lose both kids. Take the deal."

Richard looked at Eleanor. Eleanor was crying, but not out of sorrow for losing Daisy—she was crying out of sheer relief that her own reputation and her biological son might be saved.

"We... we need to think about it," Richard stammered.

"You have sixty seconds, Richard," I said, checking my watch. "At sixty-one seconds, Marcus delivers the criminal brief to the DA downstairs."

The silence in the room stretched, suffocating and heavy. Richard looked at the photographs of his abandoned daughter on the judge's desk. He looked at me, realizing that the father who had loved and supported him his entire life was gone, replaced by a fierce protector who would destroy him to save a child.

"We'll sign," Richard whispered, his voice broken. "We'll sign the papers."

Eleanor nodded quickly in agreement, wiping her tears away, eager to get out of the room.

"Very well," Judge Harrison said, her voice filled with a grim satisfaction. "Mr. Marcus Vance, present the voluntary surrender forms. I will notarize and execute them immediately. Let the record show that Daisy Vance is hereby released from the custody of Richard and Eleanor Vance, and legal guardianship is transferred permanently to Grant Vance."

As I signed the final adoption petition papers, a massive weight lifted off my chest. It was over. The battle was won. Daisy was safe.
