Chapter 8 - The Legal Bloodbath

Arthur Pendelton stood up, clearing his throat. "Your Honor, my clients admit that a mistake in judgment was made regarding the exact timing of their departure and the neighbor’s arrival. However, this was a singular incident. The child was left in a secure home with a working security system and food. The neighbor, Mrs. Gable, was fully aware she was responsible for the child starting Saturday morning. Mr. Grant Vance has used his vast legal experience to intimidate his own son, exaggerate a minor family dispute, and essentially kidnap the child from an Orlando resort."

"Kidnap?" I interrupted, standing up, my voice booming through the chambers. "Your Honor, I am the child's grandfather. I arrived at that residence at 5:45 AM after receiving a desperate call from a terrified eight-year-old who had been left completely alone in pitch-black darkness since midnight. The thermostat was set to 55 degrees. The child's primary means of communication—her iPad—had been confiscated so her biological brother could use it. They left her an ancient phone with no active service other than emergency numbers."

I slammed a stack of high-resolution color photographs onto Judge Harrison's desk.

"These are the photos of the residence at 5:50 AM, Your Honor. No food was left prepared. The security system was not armed. And here," I pulled out a document, "is the signed affidavit from Mrs. Gable herself, whom my office interviewed yesterday afternoon. She explicitly states she had no idea the parents were leaving Friday night. She thought they were leaving Saturday afternoon and that she was only supposed to check on Daisy for a few hours. My son and his wife lied to their neighbor, lied to their daughter, and abandoned a minor child to go to Disney World."

Judge Harrison picked up the photographs and the affidavit, her expression turning into a mask of pure disgust as she flipped through them. She looked up at Eleanor and Richard.

"Is this true, Mr. Vance? Mrs. Vance? Did you leave your eight-year-old daughter alone for six hours without confirming an adult was physically present in the home?"

Eleanor stood up, her voice screeching. "She is fine! Nothing happened to her! Grant is just trying to punish us because he always preferred her over Toby! He’s crazy! We are her parents! We have the right to decide how to raise her!"

"Sit down, Mrs. Vance!" Judge Harrison barked, her gavel coming down hard on the wooden block on her desk. "One more outburst like that, and I will hold you in contempt of court immediately!"

Eleanor shrank back into her seat, terrified.

Richard finally spoke, his voice trembling. "Your Honor... we love Daisy. We just... we were stressed. Toby’s birthday was important, and Daisy was having trouble adjusting... we thought a few days apart would be good for everyone."

"A few days apart by abandoning her in an empty house?" Judge Harrison leaned forward, her eyes blazing with fury. "In my fifteen years on the bench, I have rarely seen such a callous, narcissistic display of parental neglect from individuals who clearly have the financial means to provide proper care. You didn't leave her because of school, Mr. Vance. You left her because you viewed her as an inconvenience."
