Chapter 4 - The War in the Shadows

Richard tried to puff out his chest, stepping between me and Eleanor, trying to assert a dominance he didn't possess. "Dad, you don't know the whole story. You're overreacting. Mrs. Gable was supposed to—"
"Mrs. Gable is eighty-two years old and hard of hearing," I interrupted, cutting him off with a voice like cracking ice. "She was asleep. Daisy was alone. She called me at two in the morning, terrified out of her mind, crying because her parents abandoned her. Do not dare tell me I am overreacting."
"We didn't abandon her!" Eleanor hissed, her mask completely slipping. "She’s just a child, she exaggerates! We left food in the fridge. We were only going to be gone for four days! Toby has been looking forward to this for a year. Daisy gets to do things too!"
"Name one thing," I challenged, looking directly into Eleanor's eyes. "Name one trip, one special event, one thing you have done for Daisy in the last two years that matches what you do for Toby."
Eleanor opened her mouth, but no sound came out. She sputtered, looking to Richard for help, but Richard was staring at the ground, unable to meet my gaze. He knew me. He knew my reputation in the courtroom. He knew that when I looked at someone like this, they were already ruined.
"We are going back to the hotel," Richard said quietly, grabbing Toby's hand. "We aren't going to make a scene in public."
"Oh, the scene hasn't even begun, Richard," I said.
We walked back to the monorail in an agonizing, suffocating silence. Toby was whining because they had to leave the park early, completely oblivious to the gravity of the situation. Daisy held my hand tightly, her eyes wide as she watched her parents—the authorities she had always feared and obeyed—looking utterly defeated by her grandfather.
Once we reached their luxury suite at the Grand Floridian, Richard shut the door and immediately turned on me.
"You have no right to interfere in how we raise our children, Dad! Daisy is our daughter. We made a parental decision based on her school schedule and her recent behavior!"
"Her behavior?" I laughed, a cold, humorless sound. "Daisy is a straight-A student who cleans up after herself and never complains. What behavior? The behavior of not being your biological child?"
The word hung in the air like a poisonous gas. Eleanor gasped, and Richard’s face flushed a deep, angry red.
"How dare you!" Eleanor shrieked. "We adopted her! We saved her!"
"You didn't save her to love her; you adopted her as an accessory until you got the 'real thing,'" I said, the venom finally escaping my voice. "And then you relegated her to the basement of your lives."
I pulled out the old digital recorder from my pocket and set it firmly on the glass coffee table between us.
"What is that?" Richard asked, eyeing it warily.
"This is a recording of Daisy's call to me at 2:00 AM," I lied smoothly. (It wasn't recorded, but they didn't need to know that—and I had already documented everything else). "Along with my detailed audio and photographic documentation of the state of your house when I arrived. The lack of heat, the lack of an adult present, the confiscation of her communication device. I have already emailed a comprehensive brief to Marcus."
Richard's eyes widened. "Marcus? You dragged your law firm into this?"
"By Monday morning at 9:00 AM, an emergency petition for temporary custody will be sitting on a family court judge's desk," I announced calmly. "I am stripping you of your parental rights over Daisy."

Eleanor let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "You can't do that! We are her legal parents! No judge is going to take a child away from a wealthy, established family over one misunderstanding!"
"It’s not a misunderstanding, Eleanor. It’s child abandonment, a Class E felony in our home state, carrying a penalty of up to four years in prison," I said, leaning forward. "And as a former prosecutor and a senior family attorney with thirty-five years of leverage in that courthouse? I can guarantee you that the judge will not only grant me custody—they will gladly sign the warrant for your arrest."
