Chapter 7 - The Gathering Forces

We flew back early Monday morning. Daisy was nervous, clutching my hand tightly as the plane descended back into our home city. She knew that today was the day her future would be decided.
"Grandpa, will they take me back?" she whispered as we walked through the terminal.
"Over my dead body, Daisy," I said fiercely. "You are coming home with me. To my house. With Arthur and the dog. You’re going to have your own room, and no one will ever leave you behind again."
She smiled, a genuine, relieved smile, but the anxiety was still visible in her eyes.
We drove straight to the family courthouse downtown. The imposing stone building had been my second home for decades, but today, it felt like an arena. Marcus was waiting for us in the lobby, wearing his finest tailored suit, holding a thick legal manila folder.
"Grant," Marcus said, shaking my hand warmly before kneeling down to match Daisy’s height. "And you must be Daisy. You look absolutely beautiful today, young lady."
"Thank you," Daisy mumbled, blushing.
"Marcus, what’s the status?" I asked, transitioning smoothly into attorney mode.
"Judge Harrison signed the ex parte temporary custody order an hour ago," Marcus said, his voice low and serious. "The evidence you provided was overwhelming. The judge was appalled. You have legal custody of Daisy effective immediately, pending a full evidentiary hearing in two weeks."
I breathed a massive sigh of relief, but Marcus wasn't finished.
"However, Richard and Pendelton are already here. They filed an emergency motion to stay the execution of the order. They are arguing that you coerced the child and that the home environment was safe. Judge Harrison has ordered an immediate in-chambers conference. We have to go up now."
I turned to Daisy. "Sweetheart, I need you to sit here with Marcus’s assistant, Sarah. She has some coloring books and snacks for you. Grandpa has to go into a room and talk to the judge. I’ll be out very soon."
"Okay, Grandpa. I trust you," she said.
Those three words—I trust you—were all the fuel I needed.
I walked into Judge Harrison's private chambers. The room was lined with heavy oak bookshelves and smelled of old paper and leather. Judge Janet Harrison, a stern, fair woman in her late fifties, sat behind her massive desk.
Sitting on the left side of the room were Richard and Eleanor, looking pristine, put-together, and utterly fake. Beside them was Arthur Pendelton, looking uncomfortable.

As I walked in and took my seat next to Marcus, Eleanor glared at me with pure hatred. Richard couldn't look me in the eye.
"Alright, gentlemen, and lady," Judge Harrison began, tapping her pen on the desk. "We are here regarding the emergency petition for custody of Daisy Vance. I have already signed the temporary order based on the egregious facts presented by Mr. Grant Vance. Mr. Pendelton, you have filed an opposition. You have exactly five minutes to convince me why I shouldn't have your clients arrested right now for child abandonment."
