Chapter 4 - The Tipping Point

One week before the wedding, the final rehearsal preparations were in full swing at the Buckhead residence.
Olivia was unraveling. Her father’s bank accounts had been officially frozen by federal marshals earlier that morning, though the news had not yet hit the press. Desperate, frantic, and running out of time, she decided to execute her final play to cement her control over the Miller household.
At 3:00 PM, while Michael was supposedly in a board meeting downtown, Olivia staged an emergency in the master suite.
She knocked a heavy crystal vase off the nightstand, letting it shatter across the hardwood floor. Then, she pulled a set of heirloom diamond earrings—a gift from Michael’s grandmother Margaret—from her jewelry box and hid them inside the pocket of Sophie’s winter coat hanging in the service closet.
Five minutes later, her screams echoed down the staircase.
"Help! Someone help! My diamond earrings are gone!"
Robert, Linda, and Margaret hurried into the foyer, followed by Sophie, who ran up from the laundry room.
"What happened, Olivia?" Robert demanded, holding his breath.
"Grandma Margaret’s diamond earrings!" Olivia sobbed hysterically, holding her hands over her face. "They were on my vanity an hour ago! I went to wash my hands, and now they’re gone! And the room was turned upside down!"
Linda gasped, holding her hand to her chest. "Margaret’s family diamonds?"
Olivia pointed a shaking, accusatory finger directly at Sophie. "She was the only one on this floor! I saw her coming out of the master suite ten minutes ago!"
Sophie turned pale as chalk. "I didn't go into your room, Miss Olivia! I was in the basement ironing the linens!"
"Liar!" Olivia shrieked. "Robert, call the police! Search her things right now!"
Robert, furious at the apparent theft of his mother’s precious heirloom, marched toward the service closet. "If you stole from this family after everything we’ve done for you, Sophie, I will personally make sure you spend the next five years behind bars!"
"Stop!" Sophie cried out, tears pouring down her face. "I swear on my brother's life, I didn't touch them!"
Robert threw open the service closet door, reached into Sophie’s coat pocket, and pulled out the gleaming diamond earrings.
"There!" Olivia yelled, a triumphant, cruel smirk flashing across her face before she quickly hid it behind her hands. "I knew it! She’s a thief! Call the Atlanta police immediately!"
Linda looked at Sophie with profound disappointment. "Oh, Sophie... how could you?"
"She didn't," a cold, authoritative voice echoed from the front entrance.
Everyone turned around.
Michael stood in the doorway, holding a leather briefcase, his expression colder than ice. Behind him stepped two men in dark suits carrying a heavy electronic monitor.
"Michael!" Olivia cried, rushing toward him to throw her arms around his neck. "Thank God you’re home! We caught her! Sophie stole your grandmother's diamonds! We need to have her arrested right now!"
May you like
Michael gently, but firmly, took Olivia’s arms and pushed her away.
"No one is getting arrested today, Olivia," Michael said quietly. "At least... not Sophie."
