Chapter 2 - The Whispers of Buckhead

Over the next five days, Olivia’s campaign against Sophie accelerated. Emboldened by what she assumed was Michael’s blind trust, she began spreading rumors beyond the walls of the estate.
During a pre-wedding dinner party hosted at the Piedmont Driving Club, surrounded by eighty of Atlanta's most influential business families, Olivia sat beside Michael’s mother, Linda, and his father, Robert.
"It’s just so heart-wrenching," Olivia sighed, placing a delicate hand on Linda’s arm. "I’ve tried so hard to mentor Sophie. I even offered to buy her textbooks for her nursing assistant classes. But she’s constantly taking things from the pantry, and I’ve caught her asleep in the guest rooms twice this week."
Linda, whose gentle nature always sought the best in people, looked troubled. "Are you sure, Olivia? Sophie always seems so polite when she helps Margaret with her physical therapy."
"Oh, Linda, you’re far too kind-hearted," Olivia smiled tightly. "People like that take advantage of sweet women like you. She puts on a performance when you’re around, but the moment your back is turned, she’s resentful. Ask Robert—he knows how much trouble she’s been causing."
Robert nodded solemnly, sipping his scotch. "Olivia’s right, Linda. We can’t have dishonest staff in the house, especially with Margaret’s safety at risk. Michael needs to authorize her termination immediately."
Michael sat quietly across the table, listening to every word. He felt a sickening wave of disgust. Olivia wasn't just trying to fire Sophie—she was attempting to poison his mother’s pure heart, using Linda’s own past vulnerabilities against her.
Later that night, as they drove back to Buckhead, Michael glanced at Olivia in the passenger seat. She was humming a soft tune, checking her manicured nails in the vanity mirror.
"Olivia," Michael said casually, keeping his eyes on the road. "Have you spoken to your father recently about the wedding expenses?"
Olivia’s humming stopped instantly. She adjusted her mirror with a sharp snap. "Why do you ask?"
"Well, my father mentioned that your family’s contribution to the catering and floral deposits hasn't cleared yet. The planner said the vendors are asking for wire transfers."
Olivia let out a sharp, forced laugh. "Oh, it’s just a minor clerical error at Dad’s bank! You know how busy he is with his real estate holdings. It’ll be settled on Monday."
Michael knew the truth. Two days prior, his private investigator had uncovered that Olivia’s father, Richard Vance, was virtually bankrupt. His firm was drowning in tens of millions of dollars in fraudulent loans, and the tax audit was about to expose a massive Ponzi scheme.
Olivia hadn't accepted Michael out of love. She had targeted him because the Miller family logistics empire was worth hundreds of millions of dollars—a financial life raft her collapsing family desperately needed.

And Sophie—a young, working-class girl struggling to build a honest life—was simply collateral damage, an easy punching bag for Olivia’s mounting rage and terror.
"Good," Michael said smoothly, turning into the driveway. "Because I’d hate for any 'unforeseen financial issues' to ruin our special day."
