Chapter 4 – “The Woman Who Protected Donna Elena”

The sound of Bianca’s phone hitting the marble floor echoed through the entire Bellini mansion.

It was not loud.

Not really.

But somehow, it sounded like the breaking of something much bigger.

A reputation.

A lie.

A carefully built illusion.

For months, Bianca Bellini had walked through those halls believing she was untouchable.

She wore diamonds.

She carried herself like royalty.

She spoke to servants as if they were invisible.

She smiled at Nico as if she had already won.

But that night, beneath the golden lights of the engagement dinner, everyone saw the truth.

The woman who wanted to become a Bellini had never loved the family.

She had been hunting it.

And now, the entire room knew.

Nobody moved.

Not even the guards.

Because even men trained to face violence froze when betrayal came from somewhere unexpected.

Nico stared at Bianca.

I had never seen his expression before.

Anger was too simple a word.

It was something deeper.

A man discovering that the person he trusted most had been standing beside him with a hidden weapon.

“Explain.”

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Bianca looked at him.

For the first time since I met her...

she looked small.

Not innocent.

Not harmless.

Just exposed.

“Nico…”

“Explain.”

Everyone watched.

The entire family.

The people who had come expecting a wedding announcement were now witnessing an execution of a different kind.

Not with bullets.

With truth.

Bianca slowly lifted her chin.

The fear disappeared.

And something else replaced it.

Pride.

“I suppose there’s no reason to pretend anymore.”

Donna Elena immediately reached for my hand.

Her fingers moved.

Fast.

Be careful.

I understood.

Because people like Bianca were most dangerous when they had nothing left to lose.

“My name is not Bianca Bellini.”

Her voice was steady.

“I know.”

Nico replied.

She looked at him.

“You knew?”

“No.”

He glanced toward the phone.

“But I know now.”

A bitter smile appeared on her lips.

“Of course.”

She looked around the room.

“At least you finally understand.”

“Understand what?”

“That your family has been built on lies.”

Donna Elena’s face changed.

Pain.

Not fear.

Pain.

Because she knew exactly what Bianca was trying to do.

She was not trying to escape.

She was trying to destroy everything before she fell.

“Who was the man on the phone?”

Nico asked.

Bianca remained silent.

“Answer me.”

“He was my father.”

A murmur spread through the room.

Nico’s eyes hardened.

“Alessandro Vieri is your father?”

“Yes.”

The answer landed like a weapon.

I looked at Donna Elena.

She closed her eyes.

Because after twenty years, the nightmare she had buried had finally returned.

“Your father murdered mine.”

Bianca laughed softly.

“You still believe that story?”

Nico stepped forward.

“Careful.”

“No.”

She looked directly at him.

“I’m done being careful.”

The room became silent.

“I came into this family because I wanted answers.”

“Not power?”

She smiled.

At least she had the honesty to admit it now.

“Power came later.”

I watched her carefully.

Something about her confession bothered me.

Not because I doubted she was dangerous.

She was.

But because there was something else beneath her anger.

Something wounded.

I had spent years learning to read people.

The way they moved.

The way they avoided certain words.

The way pain disguised itself as cruelty.

Bianca hated the Bellinis.

But hatred that deep usually came from somewhere.

A wound.

A lie.

A story someone had been told.

“Why?”

My voice surprised everyone.

Including Bianca.

She looked at me.

“You.”

I stood beside Donna Elena.

“Why did you do this?”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Do you think you understand me?”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“But I understand pain.”

The room became quiet.

“I don’t think you entered this family just because you wanted money.”

For the first time...

Bianca looked uncertain.

“You don’t know anything about me.”

“That’s true.”

I looked at Donna Elena.

“But I know about her.”

Donna Elena looked at me.

“She spent twenty years carrying something that destroyed her.”

Bianca’s expression changed.

“You think she’s innocent?”

“I think she protected Nico.”

Bianca laughed.

“Protected him?”

Her voice rose.

“She protected a lie.”

Then she pulled something from her purse.

The guards immediately reached for their weapons.

Nico raised his hand.

Stop.

Because it was not a weapon.

It was a photograph.

Bianca placed it on the table.

“Look.”

Nobody moved.

Nico picked it up.

His face changed.

I couldn't see the picture clearly.

But I saw his reaction.

Shock.

“What is this?”

Bianca whispered:

“The truth your mother hid.”

He looked at Donna Elena.

She looked away.

That was enough.

The photograph mattered.

“What am I looking at?”

Bianca smiled.

“A man leaving the place where your father died.”

Nico stared.

“Who?”

She looked at Donna Elena.

Then said:

“Your mother’s brother.”

The room exploded with whispers.

Donna Elena moved suddenly.

Not with fear.

With anger.

A powerful anger I had never seen from her before.

She grabbed the board.

Her hands shook.

But she wrote.

LIES.

Bianca stared.

“You can write now?”

The question was cruel.

Everyone noticed.

Because Bianca knew.

She had always known Donna Elena was capable of communicating.

She had chosen to pretend otherwise.

Donna Elena wrote again.

YOU KNOW NOTHING.

Bianca smiled.

“Then tell them.”

Silence.

“Tell them why your brother was there.”

Donna Elena stopped.

And I saw it.

A memory.

A painful one.

Nico saw it too.

“Mother?”

She looked at him.

Then slowly wrote:

BECAUSE HE WAS TRYING TO SAVE YOUR FATHER.

Nobody breathed.

The truth came out slowly.

Like something buried too deeply to escape easily.

Donna Elena’s brother, Marco Bellini, had not betrayed the family.

He had discovered something.

A secret financial operation.

A betrayal inside their organization.

He tried to warn Nico’s father.

But he arrived too late.

The explosion happened before he could reach him.

And afterward...

someone changed the story.

Someone made it appear that Marco had been involved.

Someone needed a villain.

Someone needed the family to look the other way.

And Alessandro Vieri became the perfect enemy.

“But why didn’t you tell me?”

Nico’s voice broke.

That was the first time I heard it.

Not anger.

Not authority.

A son asking his mother why she let him live with a lie.

Donna Elena looked at him.

Her hands moved slowly.

I translated.

“She was threatened.”

Nico froze.

“By who?”

Donna Elena looked at Bianca.

Everyone followed her eyes.

Bianca’s face changed.

Because she understood.

The truth was moving closer.

“Who threatened you?”

Nico asked.

Donna Elena looked down.

She struggled.

Then she wrote:

THE SAME PERSON WHO KILLED YOUR FATHER.

The room went silent.

Bianca whispered:

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“No, that’s impossible.”

Nico turned.

“You knew?”

“I…”

She stopped.

Because she had already revealed too much.

“You knew who killed him?”

Nico stepped closer.

Bianca backed away.

“I didn’t know everything.”

“Then what did you know?”

She looked desperate.

For the first time, I saw the woman beneath the mask.

A daughter.

A daughter who had spent years believing a story.

“I was told your family destroyed mine.”

“By who?”

She said nothing.

“Who?”

Her eyes moved toward the phone.

The call had ended.

But the answer was obvious.

Someone else was controlling this.

Someone above Bianca.

Someone she feared.

Then the mansion lights went out.

Complete darkness.

For three seconds.

Only three.

But three seconds was enough.

When the emergency lights turned on...

Bianca was gone.

The guards moved instantly.

Nico’s face became cold.

“She didn’t leave.”

Everyone looked at him.

“She was taken.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

He looked toward the security cameras.

“Someone inside this house helped her.”

The words felt impossible.

But not in the Bellini mansion.

Nothing was impossible there.

Later that night, I sat beside Donna Elena.

The dinner had ended.

The engagement was destroyed.

The truth was beginning.

But somehow, I felt more afraid than before.

Because Bianca had been exposed.

And yet...

the real enemy remained hidden.

Donna Elena touched my hand.

I looked at her.

She wrote one sentence.

I AM SORRY.

I shook my head.

“For what?”

She looked at Luca’s picture on my phone.

Then wrote:

FOR BRINGING DANGER TO YOU.

I took her hand.

“You didn’t.”

She looked at me.

“Yes.”

Her fingers moved.

Slowly.

EVERYONE WHO LOVES THIS FAMILY GETS HURT.

I thought about that.

Then I thought about Nico.

About the little boy inside the powerful man.

About the woman who lost her voice protecting him.

About my own life.

About Luca.

And I realized something.

Love had always been dangerous.

But it was also the only thing worth fighting for.

“I’m not leaving.”

Donna Elena stared at me.

I smiled.

“Not because I’m fearless.”

I squeezed her hand.

“Because you deserve someone who stays.”

For the first time...

Donna Elena cried.

Not because she was broken.

Because after twenty years...

someone had finally chosen her.

The next morning, Nico found me in the garden.

The rain had stopped.

But the sky remained gray.

“You should leave.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He stared at the mansion.

“This family destroys everyone who gets close.”

I smiled sadly.

“Your mother said the same thing.”

His expression changed.

“You talked to her?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“She said everyone who loves this family gets hurt.”

He looked away.

“She’s right.”

I stepped closer.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“She’s wrong.”

“Why?”

“Because she forgot something.”

“What?”

I looked toward the mansion.

“She survived.”

Silence.

For a moment, Nico looked less like a mafia boss.

And more like a son.

Then he said quietly:

“Why do you care so much?”

I answered honestly.

“Because someone had to.”

His eyes stayed on me.

And for the first time...

I saw something I never expected.

Trust.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But the beginning of it.

That afternoon, a package arrived.

No sender.

No address.

Only one name written on it.

Sophia.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

And one photograph.

The photograph showed Luca.

My son.

Standing outside his school.

Taken that morning.

My hands began shaking.

The note contained only one sentence.

You wanted to protect the Bellinis. Now protect your own child.

I looked up.

The mansion suddenly felt colder.

Because the enemy had changed the game.

They were no longer attacking the Bellini family.

They were attacking mine.

And whoever was behind everything...

had just made the biggest mistake of their life.

May you like

They had threatened my son.

And a mother protecting her child was far more dangerous than anyone inside that mansion understood.
