Chapter 3 – “The Mafia Boss Who Heard the Truth”

The night before the engagement dinner, the Bellini mansion stopped feeling like a home.
It became a battlefield.
Nobody carried weapons openly.
Nobody shouted accusations across the halls.
Nobody admitted they were afraid.
But I had spent enough years caring for people to recognize the signs.
The servants walked faster.
The guards checked the cameras twice.
The housekeeper whispered instead of speaking.
And every time Bianca entered a room, conversations ended.
The woman who had once walked through the mansion like a future queen was beginning to realize something.
Her crown was slipping.
And she knew exactly who had pushed it.
Me.
Sophia.
The caretaker nobody remembered.
The woman she thought was invisible.
The morning of the engagement dinner arrived with heavy rain.
I woke up before sunrise.
I always did.
Old habits from raising Luca.
Children taught you that exhaustion did not matter when someone depended on you.
I prepared myself quietly.
But before I went downstairs, I checked my phone.
There was one message.
Unknown number.
I already knew it would be something I didn't want to see.
I opened it.
You are getting too close.
My fingers froze.
A second message appeared.
People who investigate Bellini secrets rarely live long enough to reveal them.
I stared at the screen.
For a moment, fear moved through me.
Not because I believed the threat.
Because I knew it was real.
The Bellini family did not exist in a world where threats were empty words.
I looked at the picture of Luca on my phone.
My beautiful boy.
The reason I had survived every difficult day.
The reason I had chosen responsibility over comfort.
I could not afford to be reckless.
But I also could not walk away.
Not now.
Not after seeing Donna Elena's eyes.
She had spent years trapped inside silence.
And if I had the ability to help her speak...
then leaving was not an option.
When I entered Donna Elena’s room, she was already awake.
She was wearing the dark blue dress chosen for the engagement dinner.
It was elegant.
Simple.
Powerful.
She looked like the woman she had been before life tried to break her.
“You look beautiful,” I signed.
She smiled.
A rare smile.
Then she reached for my hand.
Her fingers moved.
Tonight is dangerous.
I nodded.
“I know.”
She looked at me seriously.
No. You don't.
I frowned.
She continued.
Tonight someone will try to destroy Nico.
My heart tightened.
“Bianca?”
Donna Elena hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
Not Bianca alone.
Someone else.
“Who?”
She looked toward the door.
Then she wrote:
Someone who has been waiting longer than Bianca.
Before I could ask more, there was a knock.
Nico entered.
The moment Donna Elena saw him, her expression changed.
Mother and son.
Always.
No matter how powerful he became, she could still see the boy underneath.
“Mother.”
He walked to her.
“I need to ask you something.”
Donna Elena looked at him.
Nico took a deep breath.
“Alessandro Vieri.”
The reaction was immediate.
Her hand trembled.
I saw pain cross her face.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Nico noticed too.
His expression broke.
“You know that name.”
Donna Elena closed her eyes.
Slowly, she nodded.
One time.
Yes.
Nico stepped back.
For years, he had searched for answers about his father's death.
And now the truth was sitting in front of him.
The woman who knew.
His mother.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Donna Elena looked away.
Her hands moved.
Fast.
Emotional.
I translated.
“She said she was protecting you.”
Nico shook his head.
“Protecting me from what?”
Donna Elena looked directly at him.
Then she signed:
The truth.
That afternoon, Nico disappeared into his office.
For three hours.
Nobody saw him.
Nobody entered.
Except me.
Not because I wanted to.
Because Donna Elena asked me to.
She handed me a small key.
An old brass key.
She pointed toward his office.
I understood.
“You want me to give this to him?”
She nodded.
“What is it?”
She looked at the key.
Then wrote:
Your answer.
I carried it through the mansion.
The guards immediately stopped me.
“Mr. Bellini said no one enters.”
I looked at them.
“His mother sent me.”
That changed everything.
They stepped aside.
Inside the office, Nico stood near the window.
He looked like a man who had aged ten years in one afternoon.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
“I have something from your mother.”
I placed the key on the desk.
He stared at it.
“What is this?”
“She said it was your answer.”
His expression changed.
He picked it up slowly.
“Where did she get this?”
“I don’t know.”
He turned it over.
A small symbol was carved into the metal.
His father's initials.
A.V.
Nico went completely still.
Then he walked to an old wooden cabinet.
He unlocked it.
Inside was a box.
A box I realized he had never opened.
Not once.
He placed the key inside.
It fit.
The lock clicked.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then Nico opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
A small recorder.
And a letter.
The letter had one name written on it.
NIKICO.
Not Nico.
His full name.
His father’s handwriting.
I looked away.
This was private.
But then Nico pressed the recorder.
A man's voice filled the room.
A voice from twenty years ago.
“Nikico…”
Nico stopped breathing.
His father.
Alive.
Speaking.
“If you are hearing this, it means I failed.”
The room became silent.
The voice continued.
“I need you to know something. The person who betrayed me was not outside this family.”
Nico’s face changed.
“No…”
The recording continued.
“I trusted the wrong person.”
A pause.
Then the sentence that destroyed everything.
“The person responsible for my death is someone your mother knows.”
The recording ended.
Nico stood frozen.
I had never seen a man like him break.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
The strongest person in the room looked completely lost.
That evening, Bianca arrived.
She came dressed like a woman preparing for victory.
A white gown.
Perfect makeup.
A smile practiced in front of mirrors.
She had no idea the entire foundation beneath her feet had begun collapsing.
When she entered the mansion, she immediately searched for Nico.
She found him in the main hall.
“Darling.”
She approached him.
But Nico did not move.
“What happened?”
He stared at her.
For the first time, Bianca looked uncertain.
“You seem upset.”
“Do you know Alessandro Vieri?”
The color disappeared from her face.
Only for a second.
But Nico saw it.
I saw it.
Everyone saw it.
And Bianca knew.
She had made a mistake.
“Who told you that name?”
Nico laughed softly.
But there was no humor.
Only disappointment.
“That’s your first question?”
She recovered quickly.
“Of course not. I’m just surprised.”
“Why?”
“Because that name is from your father’s past.”
Nico stepped closer.
“You knew about him.”
“I knew rumors.”
“You told me my father’s death was connected to him.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Bianca looked at him.
Then something changed.
The sweetness disappeared.
The mask fell.
“Because I was trying to help you.”
“No.”
Nico’s voice was quiet.
“You were trying to control me.”
Her eyes hardened.
“You have no idea what I know.”
“Then tell me.”
Silence.
The entire hall seemed to hold its breath.
Bianca looked around.
At the guards.
The servants.
Me.
Donna Elena.
Then she smiled.
“You want the truth?”
Nico stared at her.
“Give me the truth.”
She stepped closer.
“The truth is your mother has been lying to you for twenty years.”
Donna Elena closed her eyes.
Nico looked at his mother.
And for one terrible second...
doubt appeared.
That was exactly what Bianca wanted.
She had not come to prove herself.
She had come to create a crack.
Because once trust breaks...
even love struggles to repair it.
The engagement dinner began at seven.
The entire Bellini family gathered.
Powerful men.
Important allies.
People who had traveled from different cities.
Everyone came to witness the moment Donna Elena would bless Nico and Bianca’s marriage.
But nobody knew the real purpose of the evening.
Nobody knew Nico had placed hidden security around the room.
Nobody knew he had a recording of his father's final message.
Nobody knew Donna Elena was preparing to reveal the truth she had buried for two decades.
And nobody knew Bianca was about to make the biggest mistake of her life.
Because halfway through dinner...
her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
A name appeared.
A name she thought nobody would ever see.
Alessandro Vieri.
Her face went pale.
She quickly stood.
“I need to take this.”
But before she could leave...
Nico spoke.
“Stay.”
The room froze.
Bianca turned.
“What?”
Nico looked directly at her.
“Answer it here.”
Her smile disappeared.
“Nico, this is inappropriate.”
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“This is necessary.”
Everyone watched.
Bianca looked around.
Then slowly pressed the button.
“Hello?”
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a man's voice came through the phone.
A voice that made Donna Elena drop her glass.
Because she recognized it.
A voice from the past.
A voice that should have been impossible.
A voice belonging to a dead man.
“Hello, Bianca.”
The room went silent.
The man continued:
“Did you enjoy pretending to be my daughter?”
Bianca stopped breathing.
Nico’s eyes narrowed.
“What did he just say?”
The voice laughed.
“Looks like your little game is over.”
And then came the sentence that shattered the entire Bellini family.
“Tell Nikico the truth.”
A pause.
“Tell him you are the daughter of the man who murdered his father.”
The phone slipped from Bianca’s hand.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
And in that moment...
May you like
the woman who came to steal the Bellini name finally lost control of the one thing she had protected her entire life.
Her secret.
