Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of the Past

The return to the DeLuca estate was shrouded in absolute secrecy. Lorenzo brought Isabella back under the cover of darkness, bringing in the finest private doctors and medical specialists to care for her recovery.

The reunion between mother and daughter took place in the grand master nursery.

When Isabella held eight-month-old baby Isabella in her arms for the first time since the night of the ambush, the room seemed to fill with warmth that cured eight months of frost and dark despair. The baby reached up, touching her mother's face, making small cooing sounds as if recognizing the heart that had carried her.

Lorenzo stood in the doorway, watching them, feeling a peace he hadn't known in his entire lifetime.

However, one final loose end remained.

Down in the subterranean vault of Pier 42, Carmine Moretti sat in a chair, hands tied behind his back, looking exhausted and defeated.

The heavy steel door creaked open, and Lorenzo stepped into the dim light. He wasn't carrying a weapon. He didn't look angry. He looked entirely whole.

"Lorenzo," Moretti croaked, squinting against the overhead light. "Have you come to finish it?"

Lorenzo pulled up a chair and sat across from the old crime boss. "I found her, Carmine."

Moretti paused, his brow furrowing. "Found who?"

"Isabella. She was alive in Vermont. Victor kept her hidden there as a backup plan in case you ever betrayed him."

Carmine closed his eyes, letting out a bitter, raspy laugh. "That bastard Victor. Playing both sides until the very end."

"I could kill you, Carmine," Lorenzo said calmly. "I could erase your family name from the history books. I could take every dollar your empire ever made and burn it to ash."

"So why haven't you?" Moretti asked, looking up.

"Because my daughter is alive. My wife is home," Lorenzo replied, his voice echoing with profound weight. "I realized something while holding my child tonight. Blood demands blood, but hate only breeds more emptiness. I spent eight months as a monster because I thought I had nothing left to lose. Now, I have everything."

Lorenzo stood up. "You are going to sign over every legal asset, every dock contract, and every legitimate business interest the Moretti family owns to a charitable trust in Isabella's name. After that, you will be placed on a ship to a non-extradition island in the South Pacific. You will live out the rest of your days alone, stripped of your name, your power, and your wealth. If you ever set foot on American soil again, my men won't shoot you—they will simply hand you over to the federal authorities with thirty years of evidence."

Moretti stared at Lorenzo in utter shock. "You're letting me live?"

"Living without power is a far worse punishment for a man like you than death," Lorenzo said coldly as he turned toward the door. "Goodbye, Carmine."
