Chapter 5 - Tearing Down the Castle

"Shoot him! Kill him now!" Victor screamed, pointing his gun up toward the catwalk.
Before any of the guards could pull their triggers, Lorenzo pressed the button on the detonator.
A series of small, tactical flash-bang charges attached to the upper support beams exploded simultaneously. Blinding white light and deafening sound waves blasted through the smelting room.
The guards shrieked, disoriented, dropping their weapons to clutch their ears and eyes.
From the rooftops, Nina’s sniper rifle cracked with rhythmic, deadly precision. Three of Moretti’s top enforcers dropped instantly to the concrete floor.
Lorenzo didn't hesitate. He leaped off the fifteen-foot catwalk, landing gracefully on a pile of rubber tires, rolling to his feet, and firing both pistols in a continuous arc of controlled destruction. Within four seconds, the remaining guards were neutralized, leaving only Victor and Carmine Moretti standing in the smoke and chaos.
Victor, panicking, grabbed the back of the baby's high chair, pulling out his revolver and pointing it straight at the infant's head. "Don't move! Don't move or I swear to God I'll pull the trigger!"
Lorenzo froze instantly. His guns remained lowered, but his eyes locked onto Victor with a fury so intense it seemed to heat the air in the room.
Nearby, Carmine Moretti scrambled back toward his armored limousine, coughing in the smoke, terrified.
"Put the gun down, Victor," Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He took a slow step forward. "Look at me. Look into my eyes. You know how this ends. You’ve known me for fifteen years."
"I made you!" Victor yelled, his hand trembling on the grip of the gun, sweat dripping down his face. "I built your security networks! I did the dirty work while you played the noble prince! And what did I get? Scraps! Moretti offered me half of the five boroughs!"
"Moretti offered you a tombstone," Lorenzo said coldly. "The moment I was dead, do you think Carmine would let a traitor live in his inner circle? You were just a tool to him."
Victor’s eyes flickered toward Moretti, a fraction of a second of doubt washing over his face.
That fraction of a second was all Lorenzo needed.
Lorenzo threw his combat knife with blinding speed. The steel blade flipped through the air, embedding itself deep into Victor’s right forearm.
Victor screamed in agony, dropping the revolver.
Lorenzo closed the distance like a striking cobra. He caught the dropping gun mid-air with his left hand, grabbed Victor by the throat with his right, and slammed the traitorous lieutenant onto the concrete floor with brutal, bone-crushing force.
Victor gasped for air, blood spilling from his arm and mouth. Lorenzo pinned him down with a heavy boot on his chest, pointing the revolver straight between Victor’s eyes.
"Lorenzo... please..." Victor choked out, his arrogance completely shattered. "It was Moretti... he forced me..."
"You took eight months of her life from me," Lorenzo whispered softly. "You let me put an empty coffin into the dirt."
A single gunshot echoed through the cavernous space.
Lorenzo didn't look down as Victor went limp. He turned instantly toward the high chair.
The baby girl was wide-eyed, watching the smoke drift through the rafters. She didn't cry. She just looked at Lorenzo, her big chestnut eyes reflecting the dim emergency lights.
Lorenzo dropped his weapon. He stepped toward the high chair, his hands shaking violently—hands that had signed death warrants and executed enemies without a flinch were now trembling like leaves in the wind.
He reached down and gently lifted the baby into his arms.
She was light. Warm. She smelled of powder and soft cotton. As Lorenzo pulled her against his chest, her tiny fingers reached out and grabbed the lapel of his wet suit jacket, clinging to him instinctively.

Lorenzo lowered his head into the crook of her small neck. Tears—eight months of suppressed, suffocating, agonized grief—finally broke through his stone facade. He wept silently, holding his daughter so tight that time itself seemed to stop.
"I have you," he whispered into her soft hair. "I have you, my little angel. Daddy’s here."
