Chapter 2 - The Shadows of O'Hare

The vulnerability of a logistics empire lay in its predictability. Every truck, every cargo plane, and every distribution node operated on a precise schedule. To protect the twins, Ryker immediately implemented a total operational lockdown, changing the family’s daily routines through a complex series of decoy security details managed by Marco’s trusted specialists.

That evening, Ryker sat in Lily's art studio—the beautifully converted Victorian greenhouse. The scent of linseed oil and turpentine was thick in the air. On the easel sat her latest painting, the golden sunrise over the empty O'Hare chairs. It was a masterpiece of peace, but to Ryker, it was a reminder of the fragile boundary between safety and chaos.

"You're thinking about the airport again," a soft voice said from the doorway.

Ryker turned to see Lily standing there, her blue eyes reflecting the fading evening light. At ten years old, she possessed a quiet perception that often startled him.

"I'm just admiring your work, Lily," Ryker smiled, walking over to gently smooth a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "The sky looks incredibly real."

"The sunrise means the dark night is over, Ryker," Lily said, looking up at him with absolute trust. "That's why I painted it. So we would never forget that the light always comes back."

He pulled her into a brief, protective embrace, his heart tightening with a fierce determination. He would face an army before he let anyone dim that light.

Later that night, in the war room below the main estate, Marco laid out the intelligence reports. Aero-Vanguard Corporate was owned by Julian Vance—the estranged nephew of the former syndicate boss Ryker had displaced five years ago. Julian had been operating out of Montreal, building a modern, tech-driven network of corporate saboteurs.

"Julian doesn't want to run the docks, boss," Marco explained, tapping a surveillance photo of a sharp-featured man in his late thirties. "He wants vengeance for his family name, and he wants the five hundred million in frozen assets currently locked in our legacy trust. He’s using the short positions to bankrupt our public stock while using physical intimidation to force your hand."

"He’s using a corporate hammer to hit a glass house," Ryker observed, his face hardening into an expression of cold calculation. "If he wants a war on the trading floor, Clara will give him one. If he wants a physical confrontation, he’ll have to face me."
