Chapter 1 - The First Brushstroke of Trouble

The tenth birthday celebration at the Steel Estate had left a lingering warmth in the air, but the transition from a carefree weekend to the structured reality of Monday morning always brought Ryker back to earth. Steel Logistics Global was no longer the shadowy machine it had been five years ago; it was a transparent, high-performing powerhouse. Yet, transparency in the corporate world often acted as a glass window—allowing outsiders to see exactly where the pillars of support were located.

Clara sat in the sunlit pavilion of the estate's primary office, her fingers moving across the keyboard of her terminal with a rhythmic cadence. As the Chief Financial Executor, her eyes were trained to spot the faint tremors before an earthquake.

"Ryker," she called out, her voice maintaining that sharp, professional clarity that always cut through his thoughts.

Ryker stepped into the room, a mug of black coffee in his hand. The years had added a few lines of silver to his temples, but his posture remained commanding, his gaze sharp. "What do we have, Clara?"

"A series of high-volume short positions opened against our primary North American transit stock," Clara said, turning the large monitor so he could view the cascading red lines. "It started at the opening bell in New York. Someone is pouring hundreds of millions into a bet that Steel Logistics is going to experience a massive operational failure within the next thirty days."

Ryker leaned over her desk, his eyes narrowing as he analyzed the trading volumes. Short selling on this scale wasn't a standard market play; it was a declaration of war. "Who is holding the contract origin?"

"A shell company registered in Panama called Aero-Vanguard Corporate," Clara replied, clicking through layers of encrypted ownership data. "But the underlying routing protocol uses an old digital signature that hasn't been active since the year we restructured the O'Hare terminal accounts."

The door to the office opened, and Marco entered. His usual relaxed demeanor was entirely gone, replaced by the rigid, alert posture of a seasoned security director. He caught Ryker’s eye and gave a subtle shake of his head.

"We have a security breach at the logistics hub near Midway," Marco stated calmly, though his voice had dropped an octave. "An unauthorized server bypass was detected at midnight. They didn't steal operational data, Ryker. They downloaded the complete family travel logs, including the route the twins take to their academy every morning."

The ghost of their past trauma had just knocked on the front gate. The peaceful life they had constructed around Lily and Owen was under an organized, deliberate threat. The war wasn't just corporate; it was deeply personal.
