Chapter 8 - Reclaiming the Future

The settlement was swift and brutal for Denise. To avoid jail time, she agreed to sign over all remaining assets to Simon, forfeit any future inheritance, and sign a permanent, legally binding non-harassment order. Dorothy and George were stripped of their executor status, which was transferred entirely to Joanna.
The trust fund was restored, with interest paid out from Denise's seized luxury property. Simonโs college tuition was completely covered, with enough left over to ensure Joanna would never have to work a double shift again.
The day the paperwork was finalized, Joanna went back to her social services office. The director personally apologized and offered her her job back, along with a promotion to a full-time counselor position.
"You're an inspiration to this community, Joanna," the director said. "You practiced what you preached long before you ever got the degree."
That evening, Joanna and Simon sat on their small porch. The heavy cloud that had hung over them for nineteen years had finally vanished.
