Chapter 5 - An Unexpected Ally

Joanna met Jonathan at a quiet diner on the outskirts of town. He looked vastly different from the arrogant man at the graduation; he looked tired and deeply remorseful.
"I want to apologize," Jonathan said directly, placing a file on the table. "I had no idea what kind of woman Denise truly was. She told me she was forced to leave her son due to severe postpartum depression and that you had legally barred her from seeing him while demanding money. After Simon's speech, I hired a private investigator."
He pushed the file toward Joanna. Inside were records of Denise’s financial transactions over the past decade. It turned out Denise had been receiving a massive allowance from a trust fund explicitly set up by their grandfather for Simon’s care—money she had completely hidden from Joanna and spent on clothes, trips, and plastic surgery.
"She embezzled his child support and his care fund," Jonathan explained. "And more than that, I found out she has been using my company's legal resources without my permission to harass you and your employer. I've fired those lawyers, and I've broken off our engagement."

Joanna looked at the documents, her jaw dropping. "She was getting money for him this whole time? While I was selling desserts on the street to buy his asthma inhalers?"
"Yes," Jonathan said, his eyes burning with anger on her behalf. "And I want to help you expose it. Not just for revenge, but because Simon deserves justice. I’ve retained a top-tier family and criminal lawyer for you. Free of charge."
