Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Encounter

Six months later, a mandatory child support modification hearing was held at the Anne Arundel County Courthouse.

Kenneth sat at the defense table, wearing a faded, off-the-rack suit that looked two sizes too big for his gaunt frame. Dark circles hung heavily beneath his eyes, and his hands were constantly fidgeting with a plastic pen.

I walked into the courtroom dressed in an elegant navy-blue tailored business suit, accompanied by Harrison Vance and two uniformed military aides who stood respectfully near the gallery door.

When Kenneth saw me, he flinched slightly, as if looking at a person from a world he could no longer reach.

The judge, the Honorable Sarah Higgins, called the court to order and reviewed the financial disclosures submitted by both parties.

"Mr. Bradsdale," Judge Higgins said, looking over her half-moon spectacles at Kenneth. "I have reviewed your financial statements. You are currently earning thirty-two thousand dollars a year as a dispatcher. Is that correct?"

"Yes, Your Honor," Kenneth said quietly, his head hanging low. "I lost my business... and my house."

"And Colonel Vance," the judge continued, looking at my file, "you are currently serving as a full Colonel in the United States Army, in addition to being the sole trustee of the Fairview Heritage Estate, valued at over twenty million dollars."

The moment the judge spoke the words twenty million dollars, the entire courtroom seemed to freeze.

Kenneth’s head snapped up violently. His eyes widened to the size of saucers, his jaw dropping in absolute, stunned disbelief.

"Twenty... twenty million?" Kenneth choked out, his voice barely a squeak. "Your Honor... did you say twenty million dollars?!"

"Quiet, Mr. Bradsdale," Judge Higgins admonished sharply, banging her gavel once. "This court is reviewing child support obligations, not your personal shock."

Kenneth stared at me across the aisle, his face twisting in a mix of profound agony, regret, and utter horror as the full magnitude of what he had thrown away finally hit his soul.
